Protective role of Arapaima gigas fish scales: Structure and mechanical behavior
Acta Biomaterialia, 2014The scales of the arapaima (Arapaima gigas), one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, can serve as inspiration for the design of flexible dermal armor. Each scale is composed of two layers: a laminate composite of parallel collagen fibrils and a hard, highly mineralized surface layer.

Abstract An 8-week experiment (trial 1) was conducted to determine the optimal feeding frequency for juvenile Arapaima gigas. Seventy-two fish (500.0 ± 50.9 g, mean ± S.E) were randomly assigned to 12 tanks (500 l) in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).
