Araucaria angustifolia and Araucaria araucana are coniferous trees with large and nutritious seeds. The structure and nutritional properties of the proteins of these seeds were studied. About 70% of the proteins of the gametophyte were soluble in distilled water, although their solubility decreased drastically in raw seed flour.

Little is known about drivers and trends of historic fire regimes in the Araucaria araucana forests of south-western Argentina. Fire history in these forests was reconstructed by the analysis of 246 fire-scarred partial cross-sections from this fire-resistant tree collected at 10 sites in Neuquén, northern Patagonia.

Abstract Two major proteins present in the cell walls of the embryo and megagametophyte tissues of Araucaria araucana seeds were partially purified, characterized and identified as peroxidases. These two proteins have M r s of 83 and 145 × 10 3 , a pI of 10.5, an optimal pH of 5.0 and a buoyant density of 1.333 g ml −1 .
