The Application of Paschen's Law to the Re-Ignition of an Arc

Journal of Applied Physics, 1937
An a.c. arc, in order to restrike after passing through current zero, requires a potential considerably higher than the normal burning potential. This re-ignition potential is investigated for short gaps in nitrogen, using pure graphite electrodes with spacings up to two mm and pressures up to 500 cm Hg.

Experimental study of the decay and re-ignition of a recombining arc discharge

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1982
Better knowledge of arc decay and re-ignition is needed for the improvement of circuit breakers. A simple but high performance device is used to study the behaviour of a wall stabilised arc submitted to recurring decay and re-ignition. It is shown that for a definite short-circuit time the arc reveals a delay between voltage and current recovery.

Analytical modelling of arc re-ignition conditions on polluted insulating surfaces

2018 IEEE International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application (ICHVE), 2018
The main propose of this paper is the elaboration of an analytical relationship of arc dry-band re-ignition condition of HVAC polluted insulators. The model is based on the equivalent electrical circuit of polluted insulator and the thermal proprieties of the dryband arc.

An Active Limit Baffle for the Phenomenon of Arc Instability and Re-ignition

2019 IEEE Holm Conference on Electrical Contacts, 2019
The arc instability and re-ignition refers to the arc cannot maintain a stable state or the arc extinguished but re-burn quickly. When a normally open relay releases, its movable contact, static contact, as well as their reeds are free, especially the movable contact of which energy cannot be dissipated immediately.

Modelling of short arc re-ignition

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1993
A unified mathematical description of phenomena leading to short arc re-ignition is presented. Computational results for a 2 mm long post-arc channel appearing at current zero after the burning of a 900 A arc on silver electrodes are discussed. The analysis concerns both cathode and anode electrode layers, for which computations were run simultaneously.

Identification of Key Mechanism Behind Arc Re-Ignition in LC Commutator-Based DC Circuit Breakers [PDF]

open access: possible2024 7th International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology (ICEPE-ST)
High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems, crucial for renewable energy and long-distance transmission, en-counter DC fault management challenges due to absent natural zero crossings and rapid fault propagation, causing energy dissipation and re-ignition issues during DC interruption.

Thermal re-ignition processes of switching arcs with various gas-blast using voltage application highly controlled by powersemiconductors

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2018
Abstract This paper focuses on a fundamental experimental approach to thermal arc re-ignition processes in a variety of gas flows in a nozzle. Using power semiconductor switches in the experimental system, the arc current and the voltage applied to the arc were controlled with precise timing.

Behaviour of short-circuit frequency and duration time and electrical conductivity during arc re-ignition in SMAW (AC) with E6013 electrodes

Welding International, 2010
The objective of this work is to evaluate the behaviour of short-circuit frequency and duration time and electrical conductivity during arc re-ignition in the shielded metal arc welding process with alternating current and E6013 electrodes. The non-parametric statistical analysis guarantees robust processing of the data, reducing the influence of ...
