Understanding the Stratospheric Response to Arctic Amplification

2023
Recent studies propose that Arctic sea ice loss and associated warming influence wave propagation into the stratosphere, affecting the winter polar vortex. Through stratosphere-troposphere coupling, this may perturb the winter jet stream and affect surface weather.

Arctic Amplification and Policy Recommendations

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2021
The objectives of the present study are to examine the consequences of increasing temperatures in the Artic and provide policy recommendations. We present a review of the connections between climate indicators and how these are amplified in the Arctic region. This has a direct effect in distant regions around the world.

On the emergence of an Arctic amplification signal in terrestrial Arctic snow extent

Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2010
The impact of declining sea ice in amplifying surface air temperatures (SAT) over the Arctic Ocean is readily visible, and this “Arctic amplification” will become more pronounced as more sea ice is lost in the coming decades. The effect of sea ice loss on atmospheric temperatures and circulation patterns is of utmost significance as these changes will ...

Spatio-temporal variations of Arctic amplification and their linkage with the Arctic oscillation

Acta Oceanologica Sinica, 2017
The Arctic near-surface air temperatures are increasing more than twice as fast as the global average–a feature known as Arctic amplification (AA). A modified AA index is constructed in this paper to emphasize the contrast of warming rate between polar and mid-latitude regions, as well as the spatial and temporal characteristics of AA and their ...

Extrapolar Cloud Feedbacks as a Driver of Arctic Amplification

Journal of Climate
Abstract The role of cloud feedbacks in Arctic amplification (AA) of anthropogenic warming remains unclear. Traditional feedback analysis diagnoses the net cloud feedback as strongly positive in the tropics but either weak or negative in the Arctic, suggesting that AA would be amplified if cloud feedbacks were suppressed.

Slowdown of wintertime Arctic amplification since 2012

The Innovation Geoscience
<p>A significant climate phenomenon “Arctic amplification” emerged during the late twentieth century, wherein the Arctic warming is faster than the rest of the world. However, recent episodes of the decreased rate of Arctic sea ice loss may bring prominent alterations to this uneven warming trend.
