Radiative Heating of an Ice-Free Arctic Ocean [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
During recent decades, there has been dramatic Arctic sea ice retreat. This has reduced the top-of-atmosphere albedo, adding more solar energy to the climate system.

Variability of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation described by three-dimensional empirical orthogonal functions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We describe the use of bivariate 3d empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) in characterising low frequency variability of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC) in the Hadley Centre global climate model, HadCM3. We find that the leading two modes are

Synoptically Driven Arctic Winter States

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2011
Abstract The dense network of the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic (SHEBA) observations is used to assess relationships between winter surface and atmospheric variables as the SHEBA site came under the influence of cyclonic and anticyclonic atmospheric circulation systems.

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.

2017 State-of the Science of Dispersants and Dispersed Oil (DDO) in U.S. Arctic Waters: Degradation and Fate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Chemical dispersants were employed on an unprecedented scale during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and could be a response option should a large spill occur in Arctic waters. The use of dispersants in response to that spill raised

CLIMATIC VARIABILITY IN THE ERA OF MIS‑11 (370–440 KA BP) ACCORDING TO ISOTOPE COMPOSITION (ΔD, Δ18O, Δ17O) OF ICE FROM THE VOSTOK STATION CORES

open access: yesЛëд и снег, 2018
The results of detailed isotopic studies of ice core samples from the Vostok station (East Antarctica) related to the MIS-11  era (the 11th sea isotope stage, i.e. 370–440 thousand years ago) are presented.

European Arctic Policy

open access: yes, 2022
The European non-Arctic states – the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland – are mostly experienced Arctic explorers. From the very beginning, their attention to the Arctic was driven, firstly, by an interest in finding the shortest trade routes from Europe to Asia and, secondly, by scientific research.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Temporal and spatial variations in maximum river discharge from a new Russian data set [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Floods cause more damage in Russia than any other natural disaster, and future climate model projections suggest that the frequency and magnitude of extreme hydrological events will increase in Russia with climate change.
