Brain Tuberculoma in a Non-endemic Area [PDF]

open access: yesInfectious Disease Reports, 2013
Brain tuberculoma has previously accounted for up to a third of new intracranial lesions in areas endemic with tuberculosis, but is unexpected in the United States and other Western countries with improved disease control. Here we show the importance of considering this diagnosis in at-risk patients, even with no definitive pulmonary involvement.

An Optimality Criterion to Determine Areas of Endemism [PDF]

open access: yesSystematic Biology, 2002
A formal method was developed to determine areas of endemism. The study region is divided into cells, and the number of species that can be considered as endemic is counted for a given set of cells (= area). Thus, the areas with the maximum number of species considered endemic are preferred.

Endemism in historical biogeography and conservation biology: concepts and implications

open access: yesBiogeographia, 2017
Endemism is often misinterpreted as referring to narrow distributions (range restriction). In fact, a taxon is said to be endemic to an area if it lives there and nowhere else.

Land snail biogeography and endemism in south-eastern Africa: Implications for the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany biodiversity hotspot.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
Invertebrates in general have long been underrepresented in studies on biodiversity, biogeography and conservation. Boundaries of biodiversity hotspots are often delimited intuitively based on floristic endemism and have seldom been empirically tested ...

The genus Cliffortia (Rosaceae) in KwaZulu-Natal

open access: yesBothalia: African Biodiversity & Conservation, 2004
The only area of endemism for Cliffortia L. outside of the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) is centred in the northern KwaZulu- Natal Drakensberg. Eleven species of Cliffortia have been recorded from KwaZulu-Natal and distribution maps are provided for each ...

Childhood leprosy in an endemic area

open access: yesLeprosy Review, 1999
A study was done on 794 new cases of leprosy among children (aged 0-14 years) detected and treated with MDT during 1990-1995 in Gudiyatham Taluk, South India. Incidence rates of leprosy and proportion of multibacillary cases increased with age, while bacillary + tuberculoid was most common.

Endemic juvenile hypothyroidism in a severe endemic goitre area of Sudan [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, 1993
SummaryOBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to assess thyroid function, Iodine Intake and exposure to dietary goitrogens of children living in an area with a high prevalence of goitre, in the region of Darfur, Sudan.DESIGN In a village where goitre affected approximately 85% of children, a cross‐sectional survey of thyroid function was performed in ...

Patterns of Endemism in Turkey, the Meeting Point of Three Global Biodiversity Hotspots, Based on Three Diverse Families of Vascular Plants

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2019
Centers of endemism and areas of endemism are important biogeographic concepts with high relevance for conservation and evolutionary biology. Turkey is located at the intersection of three global biodiversity hotspots (Mediterranean, Caucasian, Irano ...

Influence of current climate, historical climate stability and topography on species richness and endemism in Mesoamerican geophyte plants [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2017
Background A number of biotic and abiotic factors have been proposed as drivers of geographic variation in species richness. As biotic elements, inter-specific interactions are the most widely recognized.

New records of two cladoceran species (Branchiopoda: Anomopoda) from Northeastern Brazil: the importance of studies in temporary ponds

open access: yesNauplius, 2021
Temporary ponds are heterogeneous aquatic environments, in which hydrodynamics and richness of macrophytes may increase the diversity of zooplankton and other invertebrate communities.
