The problem of Area Under the Curve

2012 IEEE International Conference on Information Science and Technology, 2012
Receiver Operating Characterics curves have recently received considerable attention as mechanisms for comparing different algorithms or experimental results. However the common approach of comparing Area Under the Curve has come in for some criticism with alternatives such as Area Under Kappa and H-measure being proposed as alternative measure ...

The Use of Areas Under Curves in Diabetes Research

Diabetes Care, 1995
Recently, several articles appearing in the diabetes literature have suggested that many investigators are unclear about a number of issues involving the use of areas under the curve (AUCs). This prompted us to reconsider issues in the calculation, use, meaning, and presentation of AUCs. We discuss five issues: 1) What is a curve and an area?

Area Under the Normal Curve

2017
The normal curve serves as a mystery for many students. Students are often shown examples of normally distributed data, in the form of a bell-shape. This curve is called “normal” or “symmetrical.” This normal distribution may show a mean other than 0.

Bias and variance of extrapolated tails for area-under-the-curve (AUC) and area-under-the-moment-curve (AUMC)

Journal of Pharmacokinetics and Biopharmaceutics, 1992
The usual formulas for the extrapolated values of AUC and AUMC from tn to infinity produce estimates that are biased. An empirical correction factor is shown to reduce both bias and variance of estimates. The fitted value Cz at the last time-point tn should normally be used in the formulas, rather than the measured concentration Cn.
