We examine an argument for the non-context-freeness of English that has received virtually no discussion in the literature. It is based on adjuncts of the form ‘X or no X’, where X is a nominal. The construction has been held to exemplify unbounded syntactic reduplication.

Base Argumentation as an Abstraction of Deductive Argumentation
2021Base argumentation is a logic-based instantiation of abstract argumentation. Each base argument is a subset of the given knowledge base. In this paper, we show that base argumentation satisfies some rationality postulates, and that base argumentation is equivalent to deductive argumentation under complete semantics.

Argumentation systems are useful instruments for decision support when the arguments are changed dynamically in dependence of the users and the situation. In argumentation systems different strategies are used when the system prepares the argumentation for a given situation and/or user. These strategies correspond to some many valued logics and some of

Summary: If an object-oriented program is a collection of communicating objects, then the objects' protocols define the languages the program speaks. Unfortunately, protocols are difficult to design in isolation, so many programs' protocols are not as well designed as they could be. This paper presents six patterns which describe how objects' protocols

Argumentation framework with weighted argument structure
IEEE 10th International Conference on Cognitive Informatics and Cognitive Computing (ICCI-CC'11), 2011Theory of argumentation constitutes a general framework for reasoning and has been widely applied in computational intelligence problems such as nonmonotonic reasoning, decision making and logic programming. To capture the internal structure of arguments, each argument is assigned with a weight, which represents the argument's credibility, to construct

Philosophy of the Social Sciences, 2007
We survey the contents of Finocchiaro's papers collected in Arguments about Arguments, pointing out, where appropriate, their expected interest for readers of Philosophy of the Social Sciences. The papers include essays about argument theory and reasoning, the nature of fallacies and fallaciousness, critiques of noteworthy contributions to ...

An argument against global no miracles arguments
Synthese, 2018Howson famously argues that the no-miracles argument, stating that the success of science indicates the approximate truth of scientific theories, is a base rate fallacy: it neglects the possibility of an overall low rate of true scientific theories. Recently a number of authors has suggested that the corresponding probabilistic reconstruction is unjust,

Probabilistic Argument Graphs for Argumentation Lotteries
2014Uncertainty about which arguments or attacks should appear in an argument graph means that there is uncertainty as to the structure of the argument graph. When informal arguments are presented, there may be imprecision in the language used, and so the audience may be uncertain as to the structure of the argument graph as intended by the presenter of ...

Meta-level Argumentation with Argument Schemes
2013Arguments in real-world decision making, for example in medical or engineering domains, are often based on patterns of informal argumentation, called argument schemes. In order to improve automated tool support of decision making in such domains, a formal model of argument schemes appears necessary.
