Ascorbate-Glutathione Cycle and Biotic Stress Tolerance in Plants

2017
The ascorbate-glutathione cycle (AsA-GSH cycle) is a central pathway of the plant cells linking the H2O2-scavenging activity to redox signalling. Here, we summarize the most recent advances in our understanding of the role of AsA-GSH cycle in plant–pathogen interactions.

Proteomic and activity profiles of ascorbate–glutathione cycle enzymes in germinating barley embryo

Phytochemistry, 2010
Enzymes involved in redox control are important during seed germination and seedling growth. Ascorbate-glutathione cycle enzymes in barley embryo extracts were monitored both by 2D-gel electrophoresis and activity measurements from 4 to 144 h post imbibition (PI). Strikingly different activity profiles were observed.

Enzymatic responses of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle to drought in sorghum and sunflower plants

Plant Science, 1996
To determine if responses of H2O2-scavenging enzymes to drought differ in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, C4) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L., C3), we measured activities of the enzymes involved in the ascorbate-glutathione cycle (AGC), ascorbate peroxidase (AP), dehydroascorbate reductase (DR), and monodehydro-ascorbate reductase (MR), as ...

Regulation of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle in wild almond during drought stress

Russian Journal of Plant Physiology, 2011
In wild species of almond (Prunus spp.), the activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), and glutathione reductase (GR), as well as the levels of ascorbate/glutathione pools and H2O2 were subjected to water deficit and shade conditions. After 60 days of water shortage, the species

Ascorbate–Glutathione Cycle: Controlling the Redox Environment for Drought Tolerance

2016
Drought impact on plants, similar to other abiotic stresses, is accompanied by increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl radical (.OH) and superoxide anion (O2−). Survival strategies of plants under stress conditions often involve antioxidant defense activation. The nonenzymatic antioxidants ascorbate (

Ascorbate–glutathione cycle of mitochondria in osmoprimed soybean cotyledons in response to imbibitional chilling injury

Journal of Plant Physiology, 2011
Osmopriming treatment of chilling-sensitive soybean (Glycine max L. cv. Zhonghuang-22) seeds for 72h at 25°C with polyethylene glycol (PEG8000) solution at -1.5MPa strongly improves chilling resistance. The aim of the present work was to investigate whether the beneficial effect of osmopriming is associated with restoration of the ascorbate-glutathione

Effect of Ascorbate-Glutathione (AsA-GSH) Cycle on Hg2+-Tolerance in Rice Mutant

Acta Agronomica Sinica, 2008
Abstract The rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivar Zhonghua 11 and an Hg2+-tolerant rice mutant were cultured in solution for investigating the reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism and the dynamic change of ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle in response to 0.4 mmol L−1 Hg2+ treatment. The evolution rate of superoxide radical (O2) and the contents of

Investigating the roles of ascorbate-glutathione cycle and thiol metabolism in arsenate tolerance in ridged Luffa seedlings

Protoplasma, 2015
The present study is aimed to investigate whether ascorbate-glutathione cycle (AsA-GSH cycle) or thiol metabolism is involved in the regulation of arsenate (As(V))-induced oxidative stress and tolerance in ridged Luffa seedlings. As(V) significantly (p < 0.05) declined the growth of Luffa seedlings which was accompanied by the enhanced accumulation of ...

Delayed senescence of apple leaves by exogenous melatonin treatment: toward regulating the ascorbate–glutathione cycle

Journal of Pineal Research, 2011
Abstract:  The objectives of this study were to test the effects of exogenous melatonin on apple ( Malus domestica Borkh. cv. Golden Delicious) leaves and investigate its possible physiological role in delaying leaf senescence. Detached leaves treated with 10 m

Effects of deltamethrin on photosynthetic pigments and ascorbate-glutathione (ASA-GSH) cycle in Lemna minor

Bulletin of Biotechnology
Deltamethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide that can cause adverse effects on non-target organisms. This study was designed to investigate the effects of different concentrations (0.001, 0.005 and 0.01 ppm) of deltamethrin on photosynthetic pigments and the ascorbate-glutathione (ASA-GSH) cycle in Lemna minor, a freshwater macrophyte.
