Some behavioral effects of ascorbic acid deficiency

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1971
A study of the effects of ascorbic acid deprivation on behavior was undertaken on 5 healthy males between the ages of 26 and 52 years. During deprivation changes were found to occur in areas of personality and psychomotor performance and in certain physical fitness tasks.

Ascorbic acid deficiency in porphyria cutanea tarda

Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine, 1997
Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT), the most common form of porphyria, is manifested as skin photosensitivity caused by excess hepatic production of uroporphyrin and heptacarboxylporphyrin. In experimental animal models, ascorbic acid modulates chemically induced uroporphyrin accumulation.

ASCORBIC ACID DEFICIENCY IN THE AFRICAN DISEASE ONYALAI

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1949
ONYALAI was first described by Wellman,1in 1904. He and, shortly afterward, Massey2reported cases observed in Angola. Since then, various investigators have reported cases in many parts of Africa. A number of theories as to the cause of the disease have been advanced, but as recently as November 1946 Retief3stated that its etiology was unknown.

Bile acid metabolism in ascorbic acid-deficient guinea pigs

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1979
Sterol balance techniques have been used to determine the effect of short-term ascorbic acid (AA) deprivation on bile acid excretion in the guinea pig. The effects of a brief (2-week) AA deficiency on bile acid pool sizes and the activity of the rate controlling enzyme in bile acid biosynthesis have been determined. It was found that, while food intake

Orthodontic tooth movement during an ascorbic acid deficiency

American Journal of Orthodontics, 1974

Ascorbic acid deficiency: a case report.

Journal of dentistry for children (Chicago, Ill.), 2012
Scurvy is well known since ancient times, but it is rarely seen in the developed world today owing to the discovery of its link to the dietary deficiency of ascorbic acid. It is very uncommon in the pediatric population, and is usually seen in children with severely restricted diet attributable to psychiatric or developmental disturbances.
