An Observation‐Driven Approach to Improve Vegetation Phenology in a Global Land Surface Model

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
An empirical model calibration approach is presented that aims to approximate missing biosphere processes in a global land surface model without the need for substantial model structural changes.

Assimilation in Multilingual Cities [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2011
We characterise how the assimilation patterns of minorities into the strong and the weak language differ in a situation of asymmetric bilingualism. Using large variations in language composition in Canadian cities from the 2001 and 2006 Censuses, we show that the differences in the knowledge of English by immigrant allophones (i.e.

Biologically‐Inspired Melt Electrowriting for the Generation of Highly Biomimetic Functional Myocardium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, melt electrowriting is used to fabricate a 3D printed scaffold design that generates engineered cardiac tissues with in‐plane contraction, mimicking natural myocardium. It is shown that these tissues display advanced maturation and functionality.

Ultrafast Laser Synthesis of Zeolites

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The study presents a novel ultrafast laser‐driven synthesis technique for zeolites directly in liquid. Laser pulses create a microscopic reactor that controls reaction kinetics at femto‐ and picosecond timescales. Nonlinear light‐matter interactions drive nucleation and growth, allowing the process to be paused at any stage of self‐assembly.

Unhealthy sleep assimilation

open access: yesEuropean Sociological Review, 2023
Abstract Migrant health advantages, the ‘healthy immigrant effect’, erode over time, leading to what is known as unhealthy assimilation. Health-related behaviours are central to unhealthy assimilation, and here we focus on an understudied and central part of our daily time: sleep.
