Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

A method of predicting changes in human gene splicing induced by genetic variants in context of cis-acting elements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: polymorphic variants and mutations disrupting canonical splicing isoforms are among the leading causes of human hereditary disorders. While there is a substantial evidence of aberrant splicing causing Mendelian diseases, the implication of ...

Associated series and regular elements of noetherian rings

open access: yesJournal of Algebra, 1987
A chain of submodules \(0=M_ 0\subset M_ 1\subset...\subset M_ n=M\) of a right R-module M is an associated series if each \(M_ i\) is the annihilator of some ideal of R and each factor \(M_ i/M_{i-1}\) is a prime module (i.e. all non-zero submodules have the same annihilator).

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Alternative silencing states of transposable elements in Arabidopsis associated with H3K27me3

open access: yesGenome Biology
Background The DNA/H3K9 methylation and Polycomb-group proteins (PcG)-H3K27me3 silencing pathways have long been considered mutually exclusive and specific to transposable elements (TEs) and genes, respectively in mammals, plants, and fungi.

An endogenous adeno-associated virus element in elephants

open access: yesVirus Research, 2019
An endogenous viral element derived from adeno-associated virus containing a nearly intact open reading frame (ORF) of the rep gene (enAAV-rep) has been identified in the genomes of various mammals including degu and African elephant. Particularly, in degu, mRNA expression of enAAV-rep has been observed specifically in the liver.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Finite elements for modeling of localized failure in reinforced concrete [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this work, several beam finite element formulations are proposed for failure analysis of planar reinforced concrete beams and frames under monotonic static loading.
