Genetic Pathways to Insomnia

open access: yesBrain Sciences, 2016
This review summarizes current research on the genetics of insomnia, as genetic contributions are thought to be important for insomnia etiology. We begin by providing an overview of genetic methods (both quantitative and measured gene), followed by a ...

Association Between Individualized Education for Kidney Replacement Therapy Modality Selection and Peritoneal Dialysis Initiation: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an established home‐based kidney replacement therapy (KRT), but its uptake remains low in Japan. We evaluated whether individualized education in a dedicated outpatient clinic was associated with the initiation of PD.

Analysis of Plasminogen Genetic Variants in Multiple Sclerosis Patients

open access: yesG3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics, 2016
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a prevalent neurological disease of complex etiology. Here, we describe the characterization of a multi-incident MS family that nominated a rare missense variant (p.G420D) in plasminogen (PLG) as a putative genetic risk factor ...

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Using single nucleotide polymorphisms as a means to understanding the pathophysiology of asthma

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2001
Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease in the developed nations, and is a complex disease that has high social and economic costs. Studies of the genetic etiology of asthma offer a way of improving our understanding of its pathogenesis, with

Genetics of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus-Asian Perspective (A Review)

open access: yesEndocrinology Research and Practice, 2017
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disorder that has come up as a major cause of mortality and continues to cause enormous socio-economic loss across the globe. In the purview of this, a thorough understanding of the pathophysiology, etiology,

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
