Dissection of a Crayfish (Astacus astacus)
2016Availability: The crayfish is found in freshwater streams and ponds all over the world. There are about 300 species worldwide (Cambarus, Procambarus, Astacus and Orconectes). They are omnivorous, feeding on fish, tadpoles, worms, insects and plants. We can purchase fresh crayfishes from fishing companies supplying restaurants.

Some physico-chemical properties of Astacus astacus hemocyanin
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 19811. 1. Some physico-chemical properties of freshwater crayfish Astacus astacus were established i.e. amino acid composition, terminal amino acids, isoelectric point and a number of subunits with their molecular weights. 2. 2. Glutamic acid and asparatic acid compose 25% of all amino acids. 3. 3. N-terminal amino acid is blocked. 4.

Abstract 1. 1. Composition of egg proteins of Astacus astacus and A. leptodactylus is compared by different methods. 2. 2. Disc electrophoresis reveals seven fractions in each case, four of them being identical in both species. 3. 3. By immunodiffusion (double diffusion test) three precipitin lines can be obtained, with one of them fusing.

The cytotoxic reaction of hemocytes from the freshwater crayfish, Astacus astacus
Cellular Immunology, 1985Crayfish hemocytes displayed cytotoxic capacity towards all tested mammalian tumor and nontumor cell lines. The ratio required for the cytotoxic action of effector cells to target cells was at least 1:1. The lysis of the target cells required a minimum of 1 hr to become detected.

The Noble Crayfish (Astacus astacus) is a widespread species, it has undergone significant declines in population numbers due to non-indigenous species, crayfish plague, habitat loss and over-harvesting. Estimates of rate of decline in Sweden, Finland and Norway are as high as 78%, ~20% and 61% respectively over a 3 generation length period.

Recently, microsatellite markers have been successfully applied to reveal genetic patterns in populations of different European crayfish species. In this preliminary research, we used four microsatellites primarily aiming to check their possible usefulness in detecting hybrids between noble and narrow-clawed crayfish.

High-throughput discrimination of bacteria isolated from Astacus astacus and Astacus leptodactylus
2013Bacterial diseases and pathogens of crayfish are common, widespread, and occasionally causing serious mortalities. In order to take rapid measures for correct treatment of crayfish diseases, the turnover time and accuracy in bacterial identification is an issue. Bacteria isolated from tissues of apparently healthy Astacus astacus and A.
