Recently, microsatellite markers have been successfully applied to reveal genetic patterns in populations of different European crayfish species. In this preliminary research, we used four microsatellites primarily aiming to check their possible usefulness in detecting hybrids between noble and narrow-clawed crayfish.

High-throughput discrimination of bacteria isolated from Astacus astacus and Astacus leptodactylus
2013Bacterial diseases and pathogens of crayfish are common, widespread, and occasionally causing serious mortalities. In order to take rapid measures for correct treatment of crayfish diseases, the turnover time and accuracy in bacterial identification is an issue. Bacteria isolated from tissues of apparently healthy Astacus astacus and A.

Aquaculture of juvenile Astacus astacus in a greenhouse
2013Our recent research revealed more than 36% decline in the number of Croatian populations of noble crayfish when compared to historical data. Such alarming negative trend requires immediate conservation activities where restocking and stocking of the available freshwater ecosystems with noble crayfish from remaining populations is an important part. For

Morphological characteristics of noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) in Croatia
2004Noble crayfish (Astacus astacus (Linnaeus, 1758)) is one of four native European crayfish species inhabiting Croatian freshwater habitats and it is protected by the Croatian law. It is naturally distributed in the continental part of Croatia in the Drava-Danube and Sava River basins, forming both river and lake populations and it also occurs in the ...

Morphological diversity of Astacus astacus revealed by geometric morphometrics
2019Astacus astacus is one of four native crayfish species inhabiting Croatian freshwaters. It is known that they play a key role in the ecosystems functioning, that their populations are declining and that they are vulnerable. In order to develop adequate conservation programs for their preservation, sound knowledge of their biology and ecology is ...
