Comparative Karyotype Investigations in the European Crayfish Astacus astacus and A. leptodactylus (Decapoda, Astacidae)

AbstractThis study reports on the chromosome number and karyological characteristics of the endangered species of European crayfish, Astacus astacus and A. leptodactylus (Decapoda, Astacidae), both native to Croatian freshwater habitats. The karyotype of A. astacus and A. leptodactylus consists of 2n = 176 and 2n = 180 chromosomes, respectively.

Narrowed-clawed crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) is one of four native European freshwater crayfish inhabiting Croatian waters. Its presence was for the first time officially recorded relatively recently in the Sava River. Since then it was discovered in several rivers belonging to the Sava River basin, and in some rivers in the Drava-Danube basin.

Astacus leptodactylus is partially protected in Uzbekistan where it is listed in the The Red Data Book of Uzbekistan but under the name Pontastacus kessleri. It is also listed in the Red Data Book for Moscow. Harvesting of this species in Turkey during the spawning season is prohibited.
