A substantial body of indirect evidence suggests that some asteroids have satellites, although none has been detected unambiguously. Collisions between asteroids provide physically plausible mechanisms for the production of binaries, but these operate with low probability; only a small minority of asteroids are likely to have satellites.

Asteroid Satellite Inspired Optimization
Asteroid satellite systems, as important binary or multi-body structures in the solar system, are of great significance to the study of astrophysics and orbital mechanics. This paper proposes a heuristic optimization algorithm based on the asteroid satellite discovery process—the Asteroid Satellite Inspired Optimization (ASIO) algorithm. This algorithmopenaire +1 more source
Asteroid-Satellite Perturbation Optimization
Asteroid-Satellite Perturbation Optimization (ASP-O) is a complex nonlinear dynamical problem, characterized by gravitational interactions between the primary asteroid and its satellite, as well as orbital variations caused by external perturbations.openaire +1 more source

Formation of satellites around large asteroids
Known satellites orbiting asteroids larger than ~100 km are found preferentially around primary bodies with rotation periods 5-6 h. This is significantly more rapid rotation than is typical for asteroids this large, which have an average rotation period closer to 10 hours.Kevin Walsh +5 more

Collaborative Navigation Strategies for Asteroid Deflection Satellite Formation
2019 IEEE International Conference on Unmanned Systems (ICUS), 2019The paper focuses on the autonomous navigation method for a satellite formation-flying with an Earth-crossing asteroid. A novel model combines the spacecraft-to-asteroid measurements with inter-Sat communication to estimate the states of the satellites with respect to the asteroid based on Unscented Kalman filter formulation.
