TGF‐β1 Directly Sensitizes Capsaicin‐Sensitive Lung Vagal Neurons to Promote Airway Hypersensitivity

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 242, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Transforming growth factor‐β1 (TGF‐β1) is a pleiotropic cytokine implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory airway diseases such as asthma. Airway hypersensitivity (AHS), arising from sensitization of capsaicin‐sensitive lung vagal (CSLV) afferents, is a hallmark of these airway diseases.

The Mechanisms of the Regulation of Immune Response in Patients with Comorbidity of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Asthma

open access: yesCanadian Respiratory Journal, 2016
Background. Comorbidity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma (asthma COPD overlap syndrome, ACOS) is a significant problem in pulmonary practice, whose pathogenetic issues are not clarified yet. Objective.

From Real World Data to Real Impact: A Co‐Medication Framework for Lung Cancer to Advance DDI Assessment and Patient‐Centric Drug Development

open access: yesClinical and Translational Science, Volume 19, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Lung cancer predominantly affects older adults who already experience comorbidities and are at increased risk of drug–drug interactions (DDIs) due to polypharmacy. Traditional DDI assessments often do not fully capture complex co‐medication patterns observed in real‐world practice due to the risk of introducing confounding factors.

Updates in COPD Management: From Inflammatory Pathways to Targeted Therapies

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, Volume 56, Issue 10, October 2026.
COPD is a heterogeneous disease driven by overlapping neutrophilic and eosinophilic inflammatory pathways. This review highlights the shift from symptom‐based treatment toward phenotype‐ and biomarker‐directed care. Blood eosinophils, FeNO, and IgE predict corticosteroid responsiveness and identify candidates for biologic therapy.

Asthma-COPD overlap is not a homogeneous disorder: further supporting data

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2017
Asthma-COPD ovelap (ACO) is an umbrella term that encompasses patients with COPD and eosinophilic inflammation (e-COPD) and smoking asthmatics with non-fully reversible airflow obstruction (SA).

Interstitial changes in asthma‐COPD overlap syndrome

open access: yesThe Clinical Respiratory Journal, 2016
AbstractIntroductionAsthma‐COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS) is the widely recognized syndrome of asthma and COPD coexisting together. Cigarette smoking is a known risk factor for ACOS and is reported to be associated with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs).
