Understanding the Influence of Soil Moisture on Machine Learning Predictions of Photosynthesis and Evapotranspiration

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Evapotranspiration (ET) and photosynthesis are key processes in ecosystem functioning on which soil moisture (SM) has an important influence. Eddy covariance measurements and machine learning (ML) increasingly enable flux prediction in ungauged regions.

Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Activity by Nickel Oxide: Laser‐Based Smart Fabrication From Powders and Decoration of Titania Nanotubes

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, Volume 10, Issue 5, May 2026.
A target composed of pressed nickel powders is used for laser ablation, as alternative to bulk nickel, with a study on optimal fluence. Produced NiO NPs are used for decoration of laterally spaced titania nanotube, fabricated by anodization of titanium foil and calcination in air.

The Role of Moisture Transport Deficits in Modulating Drought and Fire Patterns in the Upper Paraguay River Basin, Brazil

open access: yesMeteorological Applications, Volume 33, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
The Upper Paraguay River Basin faced intense droughts in 1999, 2007, and 2010, coinciding with extensive wildfires. In 2007, a severe drought episode affected 97.5% of its area. These extreme years were characterized by pronounced negative anomalies and shifts in atmospheric moisture contributions from key source regions, during dry season. ABSTRACT In

The Influence of Fluvial Incision on the Lithospheric Stress Field: A Numerical Approach

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Erosion along large fluvial valleys transports important sedimentary volumes across continents over geological time, modifying the loads imposed on the lithosphere and inducing isostasy‐related subsurface stresses. This work presents numerical experiments with a visco‐plastic lithosphere aimed at understanding the distribution and evolution of

Impact of Mantle Velocity Uncertainty on Receiver‐Function Imaging of the Transition Zone

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract Seismological estimates of the 400‐km and 670‐km mantle discontinuities (d400 and d670) are crucial for understanding the thermochemical structure and dynamics of the mantle transition zone (MTZ). However, artifacts from using ray theory and uncertainties in mantle velocity structure can affect topographic mapping of these boundaries.

Laser‐Enabled Nanopinholes for Silicon Solar Cells with Polycrystalline Si/SiOx Passivating Contacts

open access: yesSolar RRL, Volume 10, Issue 8, 27 April 2026.
Conductive nanoscale pinholes are created by selective heating of pyramid tips on randomly textured silicon via pulsed laser irradiation. Due to heat concentration at the pyramid tips, the dielectric passivating layer is selectively opened at the pyramid tips.
