New parameters for in vitro development of cell lines of the species Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Geophagus proximus (Castelnau, 1855).

Journal of Fish Biology
Intending to compare in vitro cell growth in different conditions, we established cell cultures using fin biopsies of two freshwater fishes, Astyanax bimaculatus and Geophagus proximus.

DNA barcode reveals a new lineage of Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus 1758) in the basins of the Western Northeast Atlantic Region, Brazil.

Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências
Astyanax bimaculatus are small characids known as piabas or lambaris that form a complex encompassing 18 species, including cryptic species. The present study aimed to use DNA barcode to analyze populations of A.

Phylogeography and Historical Biogeography of the Astyanax bimaculatus Species Complex (Teleostei: Characidae) in Coastal Southeastern South America

Zebrafish, 2019
Astyanax bimaculatus, a ubiquitous species in many Neotropical basins, is characterized by a complex taxonomy and are currently considered a species complex. The goal of this study was to analyze 31 populations (N = 136) of this species from southeastern

Histological alterations in gills of Astyanax aff. bimaculatus caused by acute exposition to zinc

Experimental and Toxicologic Pathology, 2012
Increasing contamination of aquatic ecosystems by metals has caused various morphological, physiological and biochemical changes in aquatic organisms, and the gills of fish are recognized as indicators of environmental quality. In this context, the present work proposed to study the effects of different concentrations of zinc (Zn) in the histology of ...

Reproductive cycle of the tetra Astyanax bimaculatus (Characiformes: Characidae) collected in Amazonian streams

Zygote (Cambridge. Print), 2019
Summary A histological characterization of gonadal development in the tetra Astyanax bimaculatus was performed, aimed at determining its reproductive cycle in streams localized inside the Amazonian forest. Collections were carried out monthly from August

Effects of aluminum on the energetic substrates in neotropical freshwater Astyanax bimaculatus (Teleostei: Characidae) females

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Toxicology & Pharmacology, 2013
We investigated the effects of acidic pH and acute aluminum (Al) exposure on the metabolic substrates of Astyanax bimaculatus, and on the ability of these animals to recover in clean water. After an acclimation period, sexually mature A. bimaculatus females were sorted into six glass aquaria with three experimental groups: control in neutral pH (7.0 ...

Apparent digestibility for Zophobas morio meal in diets for juvenile yellowtail lambari, Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus 1758).

Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências
Aquaculture is essential for food security and the yellowtail lambari is of great importance in Brazilian fish farming. Zophobas morio meal has emerged as a sustainable protein alternative for fish diets.

Comparative cytogenetics and molecular phylogeography in the group astyanax altiparanae--Astyanax aff. bimaculatus (Teleostei, Characidae).

Cytogenetic and genome research, 2011
The genus Astyanax comprises small characin fish of the neotropical region. The so-called 'yellow-tailed characins' compose one of the most widely distributed Astyanax groups. A. altiparanae and A. aff. bimaculatus, are evolutionarily closely related and commonly found in several Brazilian hydrographic basins.
