Electronic tagging and population structure of Atlantic bluefin tuna

Nature, 2005
Electronic tags that archive or transmit stored data to satellites have advanced the mapping of habitats used by highly migratory fish in pelagic ecosystems. Here we report on the electronic tagging of 772 Atlantic bluefin tuna in the western Atlantic Ocean in an effort to identify population structure.

The Status of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna

Science, 2010
We are concerned by some statements in the letter “The fate of Atlantic bluefin tuna” by tuna scientist J.-M. Fromentin (12 March, p. [1325][1]). Fromentin's comments reflect widespread misconceptions used to argue against the inclusion of Atlantic bluefin tuna (BFT) in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Updated summary of conditioned operating models for Atlantic bluefin tuna.

2021
Bluefin tuna operating models were revised and refitted to data in order to: (1) account for a longer time period for which index data are available; (2) provide an improved interpretation of stock mixing data; (3) better represent assessment estimates of historical stock trends and (4) approximate uncertainties over the strength of past and future ...

A Commentary on Western Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Assessments

Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, 1998
Abstract Intense fishing for bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus in the western Atlantic Ocean began in the 1960s, when landings peaked at nearly 20,000 metric tons (mt). During the 1970s, landings averaged about 5,000 mt. The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) established a total allowable catch (TAC) of 1,160 mt in 1982 ...

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna ( Thunnus thynnus ) Population Dynamics Delineated by Organochlorine Tracers

Environmental Science & Technology, 2009
Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT) are highly valued and heavily exploited, and critical uncertainties regarding their population structure hinder effective management. Evidence supports the existence of two breeding populations of ABFT; a western population in the Gulf of Mexico and an eastern population in the Mediterranean Sea; both of which migrate and ...
