Development and Experimental Validation of a 20K Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua) Oligonucleotide Microarray Based on a Collection of over 150,000 ESTs [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Biotechnology, 2010
The collapse of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) wild populations strongly impacted the Atlantic cod fishery and led to the development of cod aquaculture. In order to improve aquaculture and broodstock quality, we need to gain knowledge of genes and pathways

Stress response to anthropogenic noise in Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L.

open access: yesAquacultural Engineering, 2015
The potential effects of anthropogenic noise on the physiology of Atlantic cod have not been well described. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of anthropogenic noise on Atlantic cod stress response using cortisol as a biomarker ...

Farmed Atlantic Cod

Journal of Food Products Marketing, 2007
This paper reports a study of quality perceptions and atti- tudes towards farmed cod amongst 90 chefs in up-market restaurants in England, Norway and Spain. Findings show that the chefs perceived the quality of farmed cod as favourable. More specifically, survey results show that product attributes such as freshness, texture of flesh, skin col- our ...

Hypoxia tolerance in Atlantic cod

Journal of Fish Biology, 1998
Oxygen saturation levels that killed 50 and 5% of cod Gadus morhua over 96 h averaged 21·2 and 27·7%, respectively. No fish survived at 10% saturation and only a few survived at 16% saturation, whereas no mortality occurred at 34 and 40% oxygen saturation. Since metabolic rate and oxygen consumption increase with increasing temperature, we hypothesized

Characteristics and Composition of Pepsins from Atlantic Cod

1991
Three pepsins have been purified from the gastric mucosa of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). The enzymes were denominated Pepsin I and Pepsin IIa and IIb. Pepsin I is a 35.5 kDa neutral protein (pI 6.9), whereas Pepsin IIa and IIb are 34 kDa acidic proteins (pI 4.0 and 4.1, respectively). Apparently, all three pepsins are glycosylated.

Is there a genetic basis to growth in Atlantic cod?

Fish and Fisheries, 2002
AbstractThere is still much disagreement and debate about whether or not genetically based growth differences occur in Atlantic cod, and there is evidence on both sides. In this review, data on genetically based growth differences in cod will be presented to shed light on this hypothesis.Motivated by the hypothesis that growth patterns may reflect ...

History of the North Atlantic cod stocks

2005
No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.During the last decades, all cod stocks of the North Atlantic have been exposed to gradually rising fishing pressures due in part to improvements in technology that result in increasingly efficient fishing practices.

Introduction to the Northwest Atlantic Cod Symposium

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1997
The papers appearing in this supplement are some of those presented at the Symposium on the Biology and Ecology of Northwest Atlantic Cod which was held at the Delta St. John’s Hotel in St. John’s, Newfoundland, from 24 to 28 October 1994. With two major specially-funded fisheries research programs being concluded, it seemed timely that a symposium ...

COD MOVEMENTS ON THE CANADIAN ATLANTIC COAST

Contributions to Canadian Biology and Fisheries, 1933
From 1925 to 1933 inclusive, during the summer season, 8,774 cod were tagged at eight points along the coasts of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and eight per cent were recaptured during the following years, none after the sixth.Cod performing a restricted migration (less than 40 kilometres) were found to be in the majority off Halifax from July ...
