Investigation of Oxygen‐Free Wetting Behavior of Aluminum on Copper via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The wettability of aluminum droplets (Al) on different copper substrates (Cu), where liquid Al spreads on solid Cu surfaces to form a liquid–solid interface, is studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental and numerical results show good agreement in the fast‐spreading regime.

Trailing-Edge Noise and Amplitude Modulation Under Yaw-Induced Partial Wake: A Curl–UVLM Analysis with Atmospheric Stability Effects

open access: yesEnergies
This study examines the effects of partial wakes caused by upstream turbine yaw control on the trailing-edge noise of a downstream turbine under stable and neutral atmospheric conditions. Using a combined model coupling the unsteady vortex lattice method

Dynamic Testing of Cold Gas Sprayed Bipolar Plates–Porous Transport Layer Coating System in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Through direct application of porous transport layer (PTL) on the bipolar plate (BPP) with thermal spraying, the interfacial contact resistance is improved. With the cold gas sprayed BPP–PTL coating system, a proton exchange membrane water electrolysis cell with a cell voltage of Ucell = 1.9 V can be operated up to i = 2.5 A/cm2 in a dynamic mode ...

Gravity waves and instabilities in the lower and middle atmosphere [PDF]

open access: yes
Some basic aspects of mesoscale and small-scale gravity waves and instability mechanisms are discussed. Internal gravity waves with wavelengths between ten and less than one kilometer and periods between several hours and several minutes appear to play a

Airborne contaminant source estimation using a finite-volume forward solver coupled with a Bayesian inversion approach

open access: yes, 2016
We propose a numerical algorithm for solving the atmospheric dispersion problem with elevated point sources and ground-level deposition. The problem is modelled by the 3D advection-diffusion equation with delta-distribution source terms, as well as ...

Resistance Rapid Heating of Aluminum Coatings in an Extreme High Vacuum–Adequate Atmosphere for Hot Stamping

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The subject of this work is the development of a corrosion‐protective coating on steel sheets for form hardening. Rapid heating in an extreme high vacuum (XHV)‐adequate atmosphere is a useful method to prevent oxidation during alloying of 22MnB5 and aluminum to obtain a metallurgical bonding.

A new metric for net extratropical cyclone activity and its insights into surface climate trends

open access: yesEnvironmental Research: Climate
Extratropical cyclones (ETCs) are ubiquitous features of the global mid- and high-latitudes and are intimately linked with daily weather variations, and play a central role in balancing the Earth’s atmospheric momentum and energy budgets. Our interest in

Revisiting the Local Scaling Hypothesis in Stably Stratified Atmospheric Boundary Layer Turbulence: an Integration of Field and Laboratory Measurements with Large-eddy Simulations

open access: yes, 2005
The `local scaling' hypothesis, first introduced by Nieuwstadt two decades ago, describes the turbulence structure of stable boundary layers in a very succinct way and is an integral part of numerous local closure-based numerical weather prediction ...
