Refined characterization of student perspectives on quantum physics

open access: yes, 2010
The perspectives of introductory classical physics students can often negatively influence how those students later interpret quantum phenomena when taking an introductory course in modern physics.

Efficient generation of Bessel-Gauss attosecond pulse trains via nonadiabatic phase-matched high-order harmonics

open access: yesLight: Science & Applications
Generating Bessel-Gauss beams in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) with attosecond pulse durations poses a significant challenge due to the limitations of conventional transmission optical components.

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Topics in atomic physics

open access: yes, 2006
The study of atomic physics propelled us into the quantum age in the early twentieth century and carried us into the twenty-first century with a wealth of new and, in some cases, unexplained phenomena.

Investigation into the radioactivity of various natural and anthropogenic radionuclides in marine sediments from the Sudanese coastline of the Red Sea

open access: yesScientific Reports
A total of sixty surface sediment samples were systematically obtained from ten distinct locations along the Sudanese coastline of the Red Sea during the summer season (June 2016) and the winter season (February 2017), subsequently analyzed using high ...

Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

Finding novel vulnerabilities of hypomorphic BRCA1 alleles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Synthetic lethality screens performed to identify novel vulnerabilities often model complete gene loss, thereby overlooking patient‐derived hypomorphic mutations. In this study, we have performed genome‐wide CRISPR screens on BRCA1 hypomorphic mutations, showing BRCA1I26A behaves like wild‐type, while BRCA1R1699Q mimics deficiency. Furthermore, we have

Wave Function Collapse in Atomic Physics

open access: yes, 1993
Wave function collapse has been a contentious concept in quantum mechanics for a considerable time. Here we show examples of how the concept can be used to advantage in predicting the statistical results of three experiments in atomic physics and quantum

Contact dynamics from the atomic scale to nanostructured surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The collective mechanical behavior of a multitude of small contacts affects the friction between sliding bodies on the macroscopic scale. The contacts are complicated systems involving many atoms, which are constantly deformed, ruptured and reformed.
