Tuning the Electronic Structure and Spin State of Fe─N─C Catalysts Using an Axial Oxygen Ligand and Fe Clusters for High‐Efficiency Rechargeable Zinc–Air Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A FeN4─O/Clu@NC‐0.1Ac catalyst containing atomically‐dispersed FeN4─O sites (medium‐spin Fe2+) and Fe clusters delivered a half‐wave potential of 0.89 V for ORR and an overpotential of 330 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for OER in 0.1 m KOH. When the catalyst was used in a rechargeable Zn–air battery, a power density of 284.5 mW cm−2 was achieved with excellent ...

Lenticular and retinal glutathione metabolism and its role in the diabetic complications of the eye. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
This study has examined the key sequential changes in glutathione and intermediary metabolism of the diabetic rat lens. An in vivo streptozotocin-induced diabetic model and an in vitro hyperglycaemic incubation model have been used to evaluate the role ...

Enhancing and Stabilizing Hydrogen Catalysis Through [NiFe]‐Hydrogenase Immobilization Within Macroporous Covalent Organic Frameworks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
[NiFe]‐hydrogenases efficiently catalyze hydrogen conversion, but their instability limits biotechnological applications. Here it is shown that encapsulating hydrogenase into hierarchical COFs with macro‐ and micropores and functionalized with sulfonic or carboxylic acid groups improves enzyme stability and electron transfer to electrodes.

Shape‐Morphing Nanoengineered Hydrogel Ribbons as Hemostats

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a self‐assembling, shape‐morphing nanoengineered hydrogel ribbon system that rapidly forms porous aggregates in situ for efficient hemostasis in trauma and surgical applications. Abstract Rapid and effective hemorrhage control remains a major challenge in trauma and surgical care, particularly for complex or noncompressible wounds.

The Biosynthesis of Opine Metallophores [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Metal acquisition is a necessity for all cells as metals are essential for the function of numerous metalloproteins and metalloenzymes. Bacterial pathogens employ several strategies for obtaining necessary metal including the direct import of metal ions,

Controlled Movement of Soft Actuators using Multi‐Responsive Microgel Arrays and Microcirculatory Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Microscale hydrogels (microgels) feature improved mass transport characteristics supportive of fast actuation and chemical tunability amenable to programmed stimuli response. A unique soft actuator architecture is realized by encapsulating microgels in soft microcirculatory systems which enable the convenient delivery of liquid stimuli for powering and

Biophysical and structural studies of chlorophyll biosynthetic enzymes magnesium chelatase and protochlorophyllide reductase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Photosynthetic organisms must generate chlorophyll, the light capturing molecule integral for photosynthesis, whilst also regulating production to adapt to environmental conditions. Chlorophyll is so fundamental for photosynthesis that it is important to

A Biologically‐Architected Wear and Damage‐Resistant Nanoparticle Coating From the Radular Teeth of Cryptochiton stelleri

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The ultrahard teeth of mollusks that feed on rocky substrates contain a wear‐resistant coating on their surfaces consisting of densely packed mesocrystalline magnetic nanoparticles within an organic matrix. These coatings display significant hardness and toughness through their highly controlled mesocrystalline architectures.
