Modulation of Gene Expression in the Digestive Tract of the Tropical Gar (Atractosteus tropicus) in Response to Cricket Meal (Acheta domesticus)

open access: yesFishes
The tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus Gill, 1863) is a prehistoric fish of high nutritional value in southern Mexico and Central America. However, some aspects related to the effects caused by alternative protein sources, such as insect meal, as a ...

Predation by Atractosteus tropicus on Bufo marinus and its possible affect on population in a lowland tropical wet rainforest [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Fish predation can affect amphibian populations. Most examples report invasive fish species and their negative effect on specific amphibians. Here we provide an occurrence of natural fish predation by the tropical gar Atractosteus tropicus on the cane ...

The larval attachment organ of the bowfin Amia ocellicauda Richardson, 1836 (Amiiformes: Amiidae) and its phylogenetic significance

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 103, Issue 6, Page 1300-1311, December 2023., 2023
Abstract Larval attachment organs (LAOs) are unicellular or multicellular organs that enable the larvae of many actinopterygian fishes to adhere to a substrate before yolk‐sac absorption and the free‐swimming stage. Bowfins (Amiiformes) exhibit a sizable LAO on the snout, which was first described in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Incorporation of Fructooligosaccharides in Diets Influence Growth Performance, Digestive Enzyme Activity, and Expression of Intestinal Barrier Function Genes in Tropical Gar (Atractosteus tropicus) Larvae

open access: yesFishes, 2022
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary fructooligosaccharides (FOS) on the growth, survival rate, digestive enzyms activity, and the expression of intestinal barrier function genes in tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus) larvae. A

Larval Development in Tropical Gar (Atractosteus tropicus) Is Dependent on the Embryonic Thermal Regime: Ecological Implications under a Climate Change Context

open access: yesFishes, 2022
In ectotherm species, environmental temperature plays a key role in development, growth, and survival. Thus, determining how temperature affects fish populations is of utmost importance to accurately predict the risk of climate change over fisheries and ...

Cross amplification of microsatellite loci developed for Atractosteus spatula in Atractosteus tropicus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Due to recent population declines in tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus), a greater understanding of its population structure is needed. A key step in gaining this understanding is the development of microsatellite loci for use in this species. For this

Evaluación de alimentos microencapsulados en el cultivo de larvas de pejelagarto (Atractosteus tropicus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Four microencapsulated diets were evaluated with respect to the growth and survival of tropical gar Atractosteus tropicus larvae. The treatments consisted of four experimental diets and one control diet 1) fish meal, 2) a combination of pork and poultry ...

Inclusion of Mannan-Oligosaccharides in Diets for Tropical Gar Atractosteus tropicus Larvae: Effects on Growth, Digestive Enzymes, and Expression of Intestinal Barrier Genes

open access: yesFishes, 2022
Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) are non-digestible carbohydrates, and their use in aquaculture as prebiotics is well documented. The objective of this work was to test whether MOS supplemented in the diet of A.
