Accumulation of L-type Bovine Prions in Peripheral Nerve Tissues

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2010
We recently reported the intraspecies transmission of L-type atypical bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). To clarify the peripheral pathogenesis of L-type BSE, we studied prion distribution in nerve and lymphoid tissues obtained from experimentally ...

Molecular Barriers to Zoonotic Transmission of Prions

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2014
The risks posed to human health by individual animal prion diseases cannot be determined a priori and are difficult to address empirically. The fundamental event in prion disease pathogenesis is thought to be the seeded conversion of normal prion protein

Risk premia reconsidered: Illiquidity and selection bias for stocks and corporate bonds in the pre‐First World War period

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, EarlyView.
Abstract Financial history is plagued by a visibility trap. Using the Brussels Stock Exchange (1850–1913), we demonstrate that asset illiquidity introduced selection bias, which systematically inflated historical risk premia. Applying a latent return model, we argue that correcting for this illiquidity decreases the equity and corporate bond risk ...

Premature closure underlies bias in medical diagnosis in students: A randomised controlled experiment

open access: yesMedical Education, Volume 60, Issue 10, Page 1102-1109, October 2026.
Abstract Objective The purpose of the study reported in this article was to shed light on the cognitive mechanism mediating between biasing information and diagnostic error. The literature suggests at least two different hypotheses: premature closure leading biased participants to spend less time on diagnosis or increased competition between diagnostic

Prions and animal transmissible spongiform encephalopathies [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinarski Glasnik, 2017
Background. Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or prion diseases are a unique group of neurodegenerative diseases of animals and humans, which always have a fatal outcome and are transmissible among animals of the same or different

Artificial Intelligence Resources for the Screening of Titles and Abstracts in Systematic Reviews: A Scoping Review

open access: yesCochrane Evidence Synthesis and Methods, Volume 4, Issue 5, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of technology enabling machines to emulate complex human skills; it can also entail problem‐solving using bioinspired methods. It is used for automating systematic literature reviews (SLR), that is, defining a clinical question, locating relevant literature, preliminary screening, study ...

Effects of Dietary Activated Charcoal Supplementation on Performance, Egg Quality, and Bone Calcification in Laying Hens Exposed to High Fluoride

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, Volume 110, Issue 5, Page 624-641, September 2026.
ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of high dietary fluoride intake on performance, egg quality, serum biochemical parameters, bone tissue, mineral accumulation, and the expression of selected mineralisation‐related genes in laying hens, and to evaluate whether these effects could be alleviated by dietary activated ...

Transmissibility of atypical scrapie in ovine transgenic mice: major effects of host prion protein expression and donor prion genotype. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2009
Atypical scrapie or Nor98 has been identified as a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) that is clearly distinguishable from classical scrapie and BSE, notably regarding the biochemical features of the protease-resistant prion protein PrP(res ...

Origin and formation of a chondritic xenolith in Krymka (LL3.2, breccia): Indications for a late formation of the accretionary breccia

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, Volume 61, Issue 8, Page 2016-2047, August 2026.
Abstract An unusual chondritic xenolith was found in two sequentially prepared thin sections of a sample from the Krymka (LL3.2) chondrite. The xenolith has a rounded, slightly deformed shape of about 5 mm in apparent diameter and is partially surrounded by a double rim made of an inner fine‐grained silicate‐rich rim and an outer sulfide‐rich rim.

What was the BSE Problem in Japan? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) problem is a big food safety issue in the world. The first case in Japan was discovered in 2001, after BSE was diagnosed in cattle in England in 1989.
