Listeners were presented with a sequence of sinusoidal tones, each tone 250 msec in duration and with no gap between adjacent tones. All tones were either 400 or 800 Hz, and these frequencies were presented in strict alternation. This sequence of alternating tones presented at equal amplitude to both ears simultaneously for 20 sec.

Throughout life, sensory systems adapt to the sensory environment to provide optimal responses to relevant tasks. In the case of a developing system, sensory inputs induce changes that are permanent and detectable up to adulthood.

RIM-Binding Proteins Are Required for Normal Sound-Encoding at Afferent Inner Hair Cell Synapses
The afferent synapses between inner hair cells (IHC) and spiral ganglion neurons are specialized to faithfully encode sound with sub-millisecond precision over prolonged periods of time.

Audiovisual temporal correspondence modulates human multisensory superior temporal sulcus plus primary sensory cortices [PDF]
The brain should integrate related but not unrelated information from different senses. Temporal patterning of inputs to different modalities may provide critical information about whether those inputs are related or not.

Inner-ear abnormalities and their functional consequences in Belgian Waterslager canaries (Serinus canarius) [PDF]
Recent reports of elevated auditory thresholds in canaries of the Belgian Waterslager strain have shown that this strain has an inherited auditory deficit in which absolute auditory thresholds at high frequencies (i.e. above 2.0 kHz) are as much as 40 dB

Near physiological spectral selectivity of cochlear optogenetics
Cochlear implant spectral resolution is limited by current spread from each stimulation electrode. Here the authors compare optogenetic, electric and acoustic stimulation in gerbils and demonstrate improved spectral resolution of optogenetic over ...

The Impact of Age and Duration of Cochlear Implant in a Congenital Deaf Population: An ERP Study [PDF]
Objective: It is well known that patients with Cochlear Implant (CI) have a large inter-individual variability in linguistic and auditory performances. This can be related to individual auditory processing abilities and integrity of auditory system from ...

Auditory perception modulated by word reading [PDF]
Theories of embodied cognition positing that sensorimotor areas are indispensable during language comprehension are supported by neuroimaging and behavioural studies.

Cochlear implants (CIs) restore activity in the deafened auditory system via electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. As the spread of electric current in biological tissues is rather broad, the spectral information provided by electrical CIs is ...
