Temporal processing in the aging auditory system

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1998
Measures of monaural temporal processing and binaural sensitivity were obtained from 12 young (mean age=26.1 years) and 12 elderly (mean age=70.9 years) adults with clinically normal hearing (pure-tone thresholds ⩽20 dB HL from 250 to 6000 Hz). Monaural temporal processing was measured by gap detection thresholds.

Lateralization of Speech and Auditory Temporal Processing

Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 1998
To investigate the role of temporal processing in language lateralization, we monitored asymmetry of cerebral activation in human volunteers using positron emission tomography (PET). Subjects were scanned during passive auditory stimulation with nonverbal sounds containing rapid (40 msec) or extended (200 msec) frequency transitions.

Auditory temporal processing in Parkinson's disease

Neuropsychologia, 2008
Previous research has suggested that Parkinson's disease (PD) impairs perceptual acuity in the temporal domain. In the present study, psychophysical tests assessing several aspects of auditory temporal processing were administered to a group of PD patients treated with bilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) stimulation and to a normal control group.

Auditory Temporal Processing in Developmental Dyslexics

The Irish Journal of Psychology, 1995
Developmental dyslexia is usually considered to result from a high level cognitive/linguistic deficit. Butit is possiblethat the phonological difficulties that most display may in part be due to impaired auditory perception. This study investigates the ability of adult dyslexics, screened for normal hearing sensitivity, to perform a non-speech auditory

Auditory temporal processing in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy

Epilepsy & Behavior, 2016
Auditory temporal processing is the main feature of speech processing ability. Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, despite their normal hearing sensitivity, may present speech recognition disorders. The present study was carried out to evaluate the auditory temporal processing in patients with unilateral TLE.The present study was carried out on 25 ...

Auditory Temporal Processing Skills in Musicians with Dyslexia

Dyslexia, 2014
The core cognitive difficulty in developmental dyslexia involves phonological processing, but adults and children with dyslexia also have sensory impairments. Impairments in basic auditory processing show particular links with phonological impairments, and recent studies with dyslexic children across languages reveal a relationship between auditory ...

Temporal Auditory Processing in Infancy

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1993
One of the most intriguing aspects of our perceptual system is its ability to derive relatively accurate and useful percepts of the world from sensory information, particularly when such information underspecifies the distal stimulus.' In such situations, organizing processes necessarily play a prominent role.

Differences in auditory temporal processing in the left and right auditory cortices of the rat

Hearing Research, 2023
In the present study, we examined hemispheric differences in the representation and processing of temporally structured auditory stimuli. Neuronal responses evoked by sinusoidally frequency modulated (FM) tones, frequency sweeps, amplitude modulated (AM) tones and noise, click trains with constant inter-click intervals and natural vocalizations were ...

Profile of Auditory Temporal Processing in Older Listeners

Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 1999
This investigation examined age-related performance differences on a range of speech and nonspeech measures involving temporal manipulation of acoustic signals and variation of stimulus complexity. The goal was to identify a subset of temporally mediated measures that effectively distinguishes the performance patterns of younger and older listeners ...

Animal models of auditory temporal processing

International Journal of Psychophysiology, 2015
Human temporal processing relies on bottom-up as well as top-down mechanisms. Animal models thereof, in the vast majority, are only probing the bottom-up mechanisms. I will review the vast literature underlying auditory temporal processing to elucidate some basic mechanisms that underlie the majority of temporal processing findings. Some basic findings
