Computational models of temporal processing in the auditory thalamus

Biological Cybernetics, 2000
Previous work has shown that neurons in the medial geniculate body (MGB) of the echolocating bat, Myotis lucifugus, display response properties that are distinguishable from those of their afferents in the inferior colliculus (IC). Specifically, MGB neurons display phasic temporal discharge patterns, poor entrainment to trains of constant-amplitude ...

Deficit of temporal auditory processing in dyslexic adults

Neuroscience Letters, 1996
Dyslexia is a common disorder with largely unknown pathophysiology. We tested ten dyslexic adults and 20 control subjects with trains of binaural clicks which led to illusory sound movements at short click intervals. In controls, the illusion disappeared at intervals exceeding 90-120 ms while in the dyslexics it persisted up to intervals of 250-500 ms.

Atypical processing of auditory temporal complexity in autistics

Neuropsychologia, 2011
Autistics exhibit a contrasting combination of auditory behavior, with enhanced pitch processing abilities often coexisting with reduced orienting towards complex speech sounds. Based on an analogous dissociation observed in vision, we expected that autistics' auditory behavior with respect to complex sound processing may result from atypical activity ...

Temporal Processing in Cat Primary Auditory Cortex

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1997
In this short review, we discuss several aspects of how temporal coding is reflected in the response of primary auditory cortical neurons. We attempt to establish a link between several different temporal response properties including onset latency, response strength to repetitive stimuli, and the recovery of a response from suppression by a preceding ...

Carrier-dependent temporal processing in an auditory interneuron

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2008
Signal processing in the auditory interneuron Omega Neuron 1 (ON1) of the cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus was compared at high- and low-carrier frequencies in three different experimental paradigms. First, integration time, which corresponds to the time it takes for a neuron to reach threshold when stimulated at the minimum effective intensity, was ...

Auditory Temporal Gap Detection in Children with and without Auditory Processing Disorder

Journal of the American Academy of Audiology, 2010
Background:Auditory gap detection is a measure of temporal acuity. The paradigm comes in two forms, distinguished by whether the sounds bounding the silent period are the same (within channel [WC]) or different (between channel [BC]).Purpose:The purpose of this study was to test normal children and children referred for auditory processing disorder ...

Auditory temporal processing deficits in patients with insular stroke

Neurology, 2006
To assess central auditory function in a series of patients with stroke of the insula and adjacent areas. The authors recruited eight patients with stroke affecting the insula and adjacent areas and eight neurologically normal controls (matched to the patients for age, sex, handedness, and hearing thresholds).

Auditory Processing Efficiency and Temporal Resolution in Children and Adults

Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2004
Children have higher auditory backward masking (BM) thresholds than adults. One explanation for this is poor temporal resolution, resulting in difficulty separating brief or rapidly presented sounds. This implies that the auditory temporal window is broader in children than in adults.

Spectral and Temporal Processing in the Human Auditory Cortex—Revisited

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2005
Abstract: We use novel noise‐like sound stimuli to identify cortical areas in which the functional magnetic resonance signal covaries with spectral and temporal acoustic complexity. The results support a model of hemispheric functional asymmetry for fine‐grained spectral and fast temporal processing.

Precise Temporal Processing in the Gerbil Auditory Brainstem

2003
