Gold(I) ion and the phosphine ligand are necessary for the anti-Toxoplasma gondii activity of auranofin [PDF]
Auranofin, an FDA-approved drug for rheumatoid arthritis, has emerged as a promising antiparasitic medication in recent years. The gold(I) ion in auranofin is postulated to be responsible for its antiparasitic activity.

MicroRNA strand ratio disarray promotes temozolomide resistance in glioblastoma [PDF]
Background Disarray in microRNA (miRNA) strand selection is associated with multiple tumors. However, the mechanisms underlying miRNA strand selection-driven temozolomide (TMZ) resistance in glioblastoma (GBM) remain unexplored. Approach and results Here,

Molecular structure of aurothioglucose: a comprehensive computational study
Abstract In order to investigate the molecular structure of aurothioglucose (ATG), six stable, well-known conformations of glucopyranose (Gp) have been computed and compared with Gp, thioglucopyranose (TGp), monomeric aurothioglucose (MATG), and dimeric aurothioglucose (DATG) models. The study has been performed using two DFT approaches.

Thrombocytopenia due to aurothioglucose, sulphasalazine, and hydroxychloroquine. [PDF]
A 56 year old woman with rheumatoid arthritis developed relapsing thrombocytopenia during successive treatments with aurothioglucose, sulphasalazine, and hydroxychloroquine. The presence of IgM or IgG antibodies or immune complexes reactive with autologous platelets could not be shown.

Aurothioglucose Inhibits Murine Thioredoxin Reductase Activity In Vivo [PDF]
Gold (I)-containing compounds, including aurothioglucose (ATG), are potent in vitro inhibitors of several selenocysteine-containing enzymes. Gold compounds have also been shown to potentiate the virulence of several viruses in mice, including coxsackievirus, implicated as a possible infectious agent in Keshan disease.

Aurothioglucose overdosage in five patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Clinical Rheumatology, 1987Five patients with active seronegative, rheumatoid arthritis, HLA-DR3 negative, received inadvertently 250 to 500 mg of aurothioglucose instead of their usual weekly dose, during standard remission-inducing chrysotherapy. Subsequently a rapid and sustained clinical remission appeared in all five patients.
