Prospecting Cellular Gold Nanoparticle Biomineralization as a Viable Alternative to Prefabricated Gold Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 9, Issue 20, July 15, 2022., 2022
Mammalian cells can synthesize nanoparticles from ions from gold salts. Gold salt drugs have been clinically applied for nearly a century, with evidence of nanoparticle formation within those patients. However, the mainstream use of these gold drugs considerably predates popular study of gold particles.

Upgrade of an old drug: Auranofin in innovative cancer therapies to overcome drug resistance and to increase drug effectiveness

open access: yesMedicinal Research Reviews, Volume 42, Issue 3, Page 1111-1146, May 2022., 2022
Abstract Auranofin is an oral gold(I) compound, initially developed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Currently, Auranofin is under investigation for oncological application within a drug repurposing plan due to the relevant antineoplastic activity observed both in vitro and in vivo tumor models.

Mitochondrial Thioredoxin System as a Modulator of Cyclophilin D Redox State [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The mitochondrial thioredoxin system (NADPH, thioredoxin reductase, thioredoxin) is a major redox regulator. Here we have investigated the redox correlation between this system and the mitochondrial enzyme cyclophilin D.

Club Cell Heme Oxygenase‐1 Deletion: Effects in Hyperoxia‐Exposed Adult Mice

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Volume 2020, Issue 1, 2020., 2020
Thioredoxin reductase‐1 (TXNRD1) inhibition activates nuclear factor (erythroid‐derived 2)‐like 2 (Nrf2) responses and prevents acute lung injury (ALI). Heme oxygenase‐1 (HO‐1) induction following TXNRD1 inhibition is Nrf2‐dependent in airway epithelial (club) cells in vitro. The influence of club cell HO‐1 on lung development and lung injury responses

Paradoxical roles of antioxidant enzymes:Basic mechanisms and health implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are generated from aerobic metabolism, as a result of accidental electron leakage as well as regulated enzymatic processes.

Decreased lipolysis and enhanced glycerol and glucose utilization by adipose tissue prior to development of obesity in monosodium glutamate (MSG) treated-rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
OBJECTIVE: To determine the metabolic alterations that lead to the neonatal administration of monosodium glutamate (MSG), which results in arrested growth and obesity.ANIMALS and DESIGN: Wistar rats were injected 5 times, every other day, with 4 g of MSG/

Developing non-animal methods for thyroid toxicity testing – Validation of a novel in vitro assay investigating Deiodinase I inhibition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
The human body can be targeted by many man-made and natural-occurring chemicals, potentially leading to adverse effects. This includes the endocrine system, essentially consisting of the EATS modalities (estrogen, androgen, thyroid, and steroidogenesis).

Thioredoxin 1 modulates apoptosis induced by bioactive compounds in prostate cancer cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Accumulating evidence suggests that natural bioactive compounds, alone or in combination with traditional chemotherapeutic agents, could be used as potential therapies to fight cancer. In this study, we employed four natural bioactive compounds (curcumin,
