Integration of Soft‐Robotics and Deep Learning to Assess the Coordinated Biosonar Emission and Reception Dynamics in Hipposiderid Bats

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, Volume 2, Issue 1, February 2026.
Combining a biomimetic soft‐robot with deep‐learning data analytics sheds light on a unique peripheral dynamics seen in the biosonar system of bats: Bats modulate their ultrasonic biosonar signals upon emission as well as reception with variable, yet highly coordinated motion patterns of their noseleaves and pinnae.

Waving Through Ontogeny: The Larval Chondrocranial Development of Staurois parvus

open access: yesInternational Journal of Zoology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The vertebrate skull is a complex structure with diverse evolutionary and developmental patterns. Anuran chondrocranial development has been shown to deviate from generalized vertebrate trends, highlighting its evolutionary flexibility. This study investigates the chondrocranial development of Staurois parvus, a ranid frog, to provide insights into ...

Skull morphology and histology indicate the presence of an unexpected buccal soft tissue structure in dinosaurs

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 247, Issue 3-4, Page 790-818, September/October 2025.
A combined approach of osteology and histology was used to examine the cheek regions of dinosaurs. Strong evidence was found for a soft tissue in this region connecting the zygoma to the mandible, here named the ‘exoparia’. Abstract Unlike mammals, reptiles typically lack large muscles and ligaments that connect the zygoma to the mandible.
