On automatic voltage regulator design for synchronous generators

Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Control and Applications CCA-94, 1994
An investigation for a new generation of practical adaptive automatic voltage regulators for synchronous generators is reported. Root locus methods are used to convincingly demonstrate the nature of the AVR problem. The multivariable structure of an existing additional feedback solution is explored.

Automatic Voltage Regulation of DC Shunt Generators

In a dc shunt generator, as the load increases the terminal voltage falls, giving a drooping characteristic. The regulation of voltage involves the adjustment of field excitation. A simple method of voltage regulation by automatic adjustment of field excitation making use of transistor circuitry is discussed.

It is frequently desirable to generate very steady high voltage direct current from low voltage alternating current obtained from a source subject to violent fluctuation. An instrument is described which will maintain output voltage constant to less than one percent so long as the supply voltage remains in the range between 95 and 165 volts.
