Tracking a Rangeland Fire With Infrasound Arrays

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 13, 16 July 2026.
Abstract We present the first infrasound analyses of a rangeland fire and demonstrate infrasound's potential in monitoring wildland fires. We recorded a prescribed fire in sagebrush steppe in cool, moist conditions, using eight infrasound arrays of diverse size (3–44 sensors, 10–200 m width) and distance (0–20 km), including four arrays inside the burn

Terrestrial Gamma‐Ray Flash Following Intense Negative Return Stroke Observed With BIMAP‐3D

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 13, 16 July 2026.
Abstract We report ground‐based observations of a terrestrial gamma‐ray flash (TGF) associated with a strong negative cloud‐to‐ground lightning strike (‐CG) which occurred near Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico, USA. Gamma photons were detected by the Terrestrial High‐energy Observations of Radiation (THOR) instrument, developed at ...

Nanophotonic Design of Germanium‐Silicon Single‐Photon Detectors for Integrated Quantum Photonic Circuits

open access: yesNanophotonics, Volume 15, Issue 13, 13 July 2026.
Nanophotonic Ge/Si single‐photon avalanche detectors (SPADs) employing photonic‐crystal‐enhanced optical confinement and a separate absorption–multiplication (SAM) architecture enable near‐unity internal quantum efficiency, low dark current, sub‐50 ps temporal response, and efficient telecom‐band single‐photon detection.

High‐Power Terahertz Emission from Picosecond Nano‐Plasma Switching Driven by Secondary Electron Emission Avalanche

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 38, 9 July 2026.
A nano‐plasma device enables watt‐level on‐chip THz generation through picosecond switching triggered by secondary electron emission avalanche. An ultra‐dense electron sheet initiates nano‐plasma formation within a ∼100 nm gap, driving rapid energy release into an integrated resonator.

TreeMig framework ver. 1.0: an R package with GUI to simulate spatio‐temporal forest dynamics

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 7, July 2026.
Spatio‐temporal vegetation models are essential for simulating dynamics and shifts in species distributions over large areas, particularly under global change. One such model is the dynamic forest landscape model TreeMig. We have developed a framework that makes the model more user‐friendly, improves its functionality, and expands its possibilities ...
