Shaping future forests: how can ecophysiology support climate‐smart forest management?

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 5, Page 2778-2813, June 2026.
Summary Climate change, particularly the associated increase in extreme events and disturbances, threatens the numerous environmental, social, and economic benefits that forests provide, both locally and globally. Heat and drought pose significant risks to forest ecosystems; the anticipated future climate is expected to exacerbate this trend ...

Feasibility Mapping of L‐Band InSAR for SWE Retrievals Across the Western United States

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Mountain snowpacks provide vital water resources for communities in the western U.S. (WUS), but high spatial variability challenges accurate measurement of snow water equivalent (SWE) from remote sensing platforms. Studies using repeat airborne L‐band (∼25 cm wavelength) Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) have demonstrated ...

Observation of a Downward Terrestrial Gamma‐Ray Flash Associated With Dart Leaders of a Negative Cloud‐To‐Ground Lightning Flash

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract We report the observation of a downward terrestrial gamma‐ray flash (TGF) during the dart‐leader stage in a negative cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash. The observation was recorded by the Telescope Array Surface Detector, in conjunction with a Lightning Mapping Array, an interferometer (INTF), a fast antenna, and a high‐speed camera.

Measure Less, Map More: Using Machine Learning, Physiography, and Prior Depth Maps to Extrapolate In‐Swath Snow Depth Measurements Across Mountain Basins

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Basin‐wide snow depth (SD) maps can support operational water supply assessments, but their availability is limited by measurement costs (airborne) or sampling constraints (satellite and drone). We present Swath‐random forest (RF), a methodology that trains random forests on SD measured within a narrow swath (<10% of a basin) to extrapolate ...

A Multiband Optical‐Radio View of Lightning Return Strokes Exposes Divergent 337/777 nm Emission Dynamics

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Simultaneous observations of ultraviolet (337 nm) and near‐infrared (777 nm) lightning emissions provide insight into streamer and leader processes. However, coordinated ground‐based measurements of these bands during return strokes remain scarce.
