Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC).

open access: yesVeterinary research, 1999
Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) cause aerosacculitis, polyserositis, septicemia and other mainly extraintestinal diseases in chickens, turkeys and other avian species. APEC are found in the intestinal microflora of healthy birds and most of the diseases associated with them are secondary to environmental and host predisposing factors.

Effects of an Organic Acid Blend on Growth Performance, Redox Homeostasis, and Intestinal Microbiota of Broilers in an Antibiotic‐Free Production System Under Winter Environmental Challenges

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Schematic summary of the effects of organic acids on growth performance and gut health‐related parameters in broilers. ABSTRACT This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of an organic acid blend on growth performance, redox homeostasis, and intestinal microbiota of broilers raised in an antibiotic‐free system during the winter season in China ...

Integrated one‐pot CRISPR‐Cas detection: Addressing strategies and future prospects

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, EarlyView.
Integrated one‐pot CRISPR‐Cas detection significantly simplifies workflows, reduces cross‐contamination risks, and shortens turnaround times, making it highly suitable for point‐of‐care testing (POCT) and resource‐limited settings. Key challenges include system compatibility issues between Cas proteins and isothermal amplification, limited multiplexing

Two‐Dimensional Materials For Lateral Flow Assays: A Critical Review of Functional Roles and Translational Challenges

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
2D nanosheets, with large surface area, excellent optical/electrical properties, and high specificity, combine with lateral flow assay strips to enable rapid, readable detection, boosting the strips’ development and applications. Abstract Lateral flow assays (LFAs) are widely used for point‐of‐care diagnostics, but their detection capability remains ...

From Data to Knowledge to Wisdom: Lessons Learned From the Vancouver Rat Project

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
A synthesis of 15 years of research conducted by the Vancouver Rat Project revealed that: (1) Pathogen ecology within rat colonies is the result of complex interactions among rats, pathogens, and vectors. (2) Local and global population structures influence rat and pathogen ecology.

Role of Virulence Factors in Resistance of Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli to Serum and in Pathogenicity [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 2003
ABSTRACT In chickens, colibacillosis is caused by avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) via respiratory tract infection. Many virulence factors, including type 1 (F1A) and P (F11) fimbriae, curli, aerobactin, K1 capsule, and temperature-sensitive hemagglutinin (Tsh) and plasmid DNA regions have been ...

Clonal study of avian Escherichia coli strains by fliC conserved-DNA-sequence regions analysis Estudo clonal de Escherichia coli aviário por análise de seqüências de DNA conservadas do gene fliC

open access: yesPesquisa Veterinária Brasileira, 2008
The clonal relationship among avian Escherichia coli strains and their genetic proximity with human pathogenic E. coli, Salmonela enterica, Yersinia enterocolitica and Proteus mirabilis, was determined by the DNA sequencing of the conserved 5' and 3 ...

Full‐length coding sequence analysis of the voltage‐gated sodium channel and acetylcholinesterase genes reveals target‐site mutations and acetylcholinesterase gene duplication in housefly (Musca domestica) populations in Japanese livestock barns

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
We simultaneously analysed insecticide resistance mutations in VGSC and AChE using NGS and hybridization probe capture in houseflies collected from livestock facilities for the first time. Resistance mutations in both VGSC and AChE were detected in most wild populations, suggesting widespread distribution of resistance genes.

An evaluation of the virulence and adherence properties of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli

open access: yesOne Health, 2017
Avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) cause disease primarly in poultry; however, the link between APEC and infections in humans is questionable. In this current study, a total of 100 APEC strains isolated from chickens in Delmarva were evaluated for the presence of virulence genes to investigate their zoonotic potential in humans.
