Subnanometer-resolution structures of the grass carp reovirus core and virion. [PDF]
Grass carp reovirus (GCRV) is a member of the Aquareovirus genus of the family Reoviridae, a large family of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) viruses infecting plants, insects, fishes and mammals.

Coccidiosis is one of the most common diseases in the poultry industry worldwide (especially in broilers aged 3–6 weeks), causing significant economic losses to poultry farmers and governments every year. Conventional methods (anticoccidial chemical compounds) for the coccidiosis debarment and control always present challenges and disadvantages, such ...

Application of chicken microarrays for gene expression analysis in other avian species [PDF]
BACKGROUND: With the threat of emerging infectious diseases such as avian influenza, whose natural hosts are thought to be a variety of wild water birds including duck, we are armed with very few genomic resources to investigate large scale immunological

Novel duck orthoreovirus (NDRV) infection induces severe splenic necrosis in ducks, resulting in a cascade of detrimental consequences, including immunosuppression, secondary infections, and diminished vaccine efficacy. Avian orthoreovirus (ARV) exhibits high tropism for macrophages, with splenic macrophages being identified as the primary target cells

Health evaluation of African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) in southern Africa
The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) is an endangered seabird that breeds along the coast of Namibia and South Africa, and disease surveillance was identified as a priority for its conservation.

A putative ATPase mediates RNA transcription and capping in a dsRNA virus. [PDF]
mRNA transcription in dsRNA viruses is a highly regulated process but the mechanism of this regulation is not known. Here, by nucleoside triphosphatase (NTPase) assay and comparisons of six high-resolution (2.9-3.1 Å) cryo-electron microscopy structures ...

We present a methodological framework for health risk analysis (disease risk analysis) for conservation translocation that enables the process to be scaled and adapted to the project context. We illustrate its application to two wader (shorebird) population restoration projects with differing translocation plans.

In vitro characterization of an avian reovirus vaccine strain [PDF]
In vitro studies were performed to characterize the vaccine strain, designated P100, derived from the arthrogenic reovirus isolate, S1133, by cold adaptation. P100 appeared to be temperature sensitive, shown by a marked drop in titer and efficiency of plaquing after incubation at 41 degrees.
