Azobenzene photoswitches in bulk materials
Physical Review E, 2008A nonadiabatic two-scale quantum-classical dynamics method is developed to allow for dynamical simulation of photoinduced processes and reactions in chemically complex condensed-matter systems such as photosensitive liquid crystals. A first application to photoswitching of azobenzene in the bulk reveals not only valuable insights into the excited-state

Rotational Barriers in Azobenzene and Azonaphthalene
The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2010Theoretical predictions of rotational barriers for pi-conjugated substituents of aromatic rings sometimes significantly overestimate the corresponding experimental values. In this work, the rotational barriers in benzaldehyde, azobenzene, and azonaphthalene are studied by DFT calculations employing a variety of exchange-correlation functionals and ...

Direct ortho-mercuration reactions of azobenzene and ortho-substituted azobenzenes
Journal of Organometallic Chemistry, 1976Abstract The mercuration of azobenzene occurred exclusively in the ortho -position to yield 2-chloromercuriazobenzene and a mixture which on iodination gave 2,2'and 2,6-diiodoazobenzene. Ten other ortho -substituted azobenzenes were mercurated and mercuration was found to occur predominately in an ortho -position.

Photoisomerization in different classes of azobenzene
Chem. Soc. Rev., 2012Azobenzene undergoes trans→cis isomerization when irradiated with light tuned to an appropriate wavelength. The reverse cis→trans isomerization can be driven by light or occurs thermally in the dark. Azobenzene's photochromatic properties make it an ideal component of numerous molecular devices and functional materials.

Synthesis and isomerization of azobenzene dendrimers
Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences, 20033,3',5,5'-Tetramethoxyazobenzene and related meta-substituted azobenzene dendrimers show the first evidence of the dendritic effect on trans-to-cis photoisomerization; the thermodynamic parameters for cis-to-trans isomerization have been determined.

Photoresponsive Dendritic Azobenzene Peptides
ChemBioChem, 2001Two dendritic peptides containing a branched lysine core and up to eight azobenzene moieties in the periphery were synthesized on solid support employing the omega-amino acid 4-(aminomethyl)phenylazobenzoic acid. With an additional peptidic tail consisting of an oligolysine portion, water solubility was achieved for the dendrimers, which allowed for ...

Laterally Mounted Azobenzenes on Platforms
The Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2015Triazatriangulenium ions have previously been used as platforms to prepare self-assembled monolayers of functional molecules such as azobenzenes with vertical orientation and that are free-standing on gold surfaces. We have now prepared azobenzenes that are spanned between two posts which are attached on two platforms.

Comparative Studies of thetrans−cisPhotoisomerizations of Azobenzene and a Bridged Azobenzene
The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2010Using density-functional-based molecular dynamics simulations, we have performed comparative studies of the trans-cis isomerizations of azobenzene and bridged azobenzene (B-Ab) 5,6-dihydrodibenzo[c,g][1,2]diazocine induced by nπ* electronic excitation.
