Light-addressable liquid crystal polymer dispersed liquid crystal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Scattering-free liquid crystal polymer-dispersed liquid crystal polymer (LCPDLC) films are fabricated by combining a room temperature polymerizable liquid crystal (LC) monomer with a mesogenic photosensitive LC.

Influence of the porosity on the photoresponse of a liquid crystal elastomer [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2016
Azobenzene containing liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are among of the most prominent photoresponsive polymers due to their fast and reversible response to different light stimuli.

Ultrafast vectorial and scalar dynamics of ionic clusters: Azobenzene solvated by oxygen [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The ultrafast dynamics of clusters of trans-azobenzene anion (A–) solvated by oxygen molecules was investigated using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy.

Cell Adhesion by Design: Engineering Tissue Culture Scaffolds With Adhesion Cues

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In scaffold‐based tissue engineering, the matrix should provide adequate adhesion cues for cell attachment, spreading, and function. Given the multitude of adhesion receptors and the diversity of scaffolds, there are many approaches to render scaffolds adhesive, even though they are not all equivalent.

Bistability loss as key feature in azobenzene (non-)switching on metal surfaces

open access: yes, 2012
Coinage metal adsorbed azobenzene is investigated as prototypical molecular switch. It is shown that switching capabilities are not just lost due to excited state quenching, but already due to changes in the ground state energetics.

Light Switchable Ionic Conductivity of Arylazopyrazole Modified Polysiloxanes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
We present a polysiloxane functionalized with a novel arylazopyrazole dye that undergoes reversible photoisomerization. Upon lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide addition and UV irradiation, the polymer exhibits a shift in tan(d) toward higher frequencies and enhanced ionic conductivity.

UV-isomerisation in nematic elastomers as a route to photo-mechanical transducer

open access: yes, 2002
The macroscopic shape of liquid crystalline elastomers strongly depends on the order parameter of the mesogenic groups. This order can be manipulated if photoisomerisable groups, e.g. containing N=N bonds, are introduced into the material.

Photoinduced Doughnut-Shaped Nanostructures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We show that an incoherent unpolarized single-beam illumination is able to photoinduce nano-doughnuts on the surface of azopolymer thin films. We demonstrate that individual doughnut-shaped nano-objects as well as clusters of several adjacent nano ...

Reprocessable Photodeformable Azobenzene Polymers [PDF]

open access: yesMolecules, 2021
Photodeformable azobenzene (azo) polymers are a class of smart polymers that can efficiently convert light energy into mechanical power, holding great promise in various photoactuating applications. They are typically of crosslinked polymer networks with highly oriented azo mesogens embedded inside. Upon exposure to the light of appropriate wavelength,
