Hearing loss in experimental bacterial meningitis

open access: yes, 1997
Experimental meningitis was induced in pigmented guinea pigs by subarachnoid inoculation of \(1 \times 10^9\) Escherichia coli K-12 or \(3 \times 10^7\) CFU Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 2 D39 (NCTC 7466) or PLN-A, \(\Delta\)NA1 or \(\Delta\)HY1 ...

Emergence of Fosfomycin Resistance Among ESBL‐Producing Escherichia coli in Abadan, Southwestern Iran

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 9, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aim Escherichia coli is a key pathogen responsible for various infections, such as urinary tract infections, gastroenteritis, and wound infections. The increasing occurrence of antimicrobial resistance, particularly in extended‐spectrum β‐lactamase (ESBL)‐producing strains, poses a significant global health threat.

Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Neonatal Sepsis in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a Tertiary Hospital in Bangladesh: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 9, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims Neonatal sepsis is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in low‐ and middle‐income countries, including Bangladesh. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and identify associated risk factors of neonatal sepsis among neonates admitted to a tertiary hospital in Bangladesh.

Cause of Death and Risk of Death for People Living With HIV Admitted to Hospital: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesJournal of the International AIDS Society, Volume 29, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Despite increasing access to HIV treatment and care, HIV‐associated deaths remain high. We aimed to summarize global and regional trends in risk and causes of death among people living with HIV (PLHIV) admitted to hospital. Methods We conducted a systematic search across eight databases on 23 April 2023, identifying studies that ...

Gut Microbiota as a Key Modulator in the Pathophysiology of Sepsis: SURVEIL Project

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 3, June 2026.
Longitudinal profiling of 132 hospitalized patients reveals that age, colonization status, and sepsis interact to shape gut microbiota diversity and composition. Sepsis is associated with reduced alpha diversity, beta‐diversity shifts, functional predictions (methanogenesis, nitrate/sulfate respiration), and partial MDR overlap with bloodstream ...

Divergent Resilience of Bacterial and Fungal Gut Microbiota After Colorectal Surgery: Insights From a Prospective Longitudinal Cohort Study

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 6, June 2026.
Patients undergoing colorectal surgery (n = 59) were sampled before and after surgery to investigate perioperative microbiome dynamics. Using 16S rRNA and ITS2 genes amplicon sequencing, bacterial diversity significantly decreased postoperatively, while fungal communities remained resilient.

Pathways of Protein Secretion in Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes: Molecular Mechanisms, Biological Functions, and Therapeutic Opportunities

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 6, June 2026.
This graphical abstract delineates noncanonical protein secretion systems across eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Eukaryotic UcPS covers four ER–Golgi bypass pathways, enabling rapid leaderless protein export via direct transmembrane translocation or vesicle‐mediated release.
