Aliphatic alcohols induced a state of continuous uncoordinated translational movement in Pseudomonas fluorescens, Citrobacter freundii, Alcaligenes faecalis, and Rhodospirillum rubrum. This behavior was reversible and ceased upon removal of the stimulus. A hypothesis based upon electrostatic mechanisms is presented to explain these observations.
