Bacterial outer membrane proteins assemble via asymmetric interactions with the BamA β-barrel

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
The integration of β-barrel proteins into the bacterial outer membrane (OM) is catalysed by the β-barrel assembly machinery (BAM). The central BAM subunit (BamA) itself contains a β-barrel domain that is essential for OM protein biogenesis, but its ...

Redefining Therapies for Drug‐Resistant Tuberculosis: Synergistic Effects of Antimicrobial Peptides, Nanotechnology, and Computational Design

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Antimicrobial peptide (AMP)‐loaded nanocarriers provide a multifunctional strategy to combat drug‐resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. By enhancing intracellular delivery, bypassing efflux pumps, and disrupting bacterial membranes, this platform restores phagolysosome fusion and macrophage function.

Polymyxins slow down lateral diffusion of proteins and lipopolysaccharide in the E. coli outer membrane

open access: yesCommunications Biology
Polymyxins are often administered as last resort antibiotics for Gram-negative bacterial infections. However, given unwanted side-effects, efficacy and recent reports of resistance against polymyxins, there is an urgency to develop alternatives.

Mesenchymal stromal cell-derived nanovesicles ameliorate bacterial outer membrane vesicle-induced sepsis via IL-10

open access: yesStem cell research & therapeutics, 2019
Sepsis remains a source of high mortality in hospitalized patients despite proper antibiotic approaches. Encouragingly, mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and their produced extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been shown to elicit anti-inflammatory effects ...

Biomimetic Copper Nanoparticles Coated with ACE2‐Overexpressing Membranes for Selective SARS‐CoV‐2 Neutralization and Disinfection

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
By fusing ACE2‐overexpressing membrane‐integrated liposome (MIL) with copper nanoparticles, the biomimetic Cu@MIL nanostructures were created that directly hijack the SARS‐CoV‐2 entry pathway. These particles combine potent virus‐targeting precision with intrinsic antiviral activity, achieving rapid neutralization and disinfection.

Epoxytiglianes potentiate the activity of colistin against resistant Escherichia coli via modification of the bacterial cell membrane

open access: yesmBio
The unrestricted use of colistin in animal husbandry has led to the emergence of mobile plasmid-borne colistin resistance (mcr). The antimicrobial epoxytigliane, EBC-1013, has been shown to be effective in the topical treatment of biofilm-mediated ...

Bacterial outer membrane vesicles engineered with lipidated antigens as a platform for Staphylococcus aureus vaccine

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2019
Significance Thanks to their potent built-in adjuvanticity, bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) represent an attractive vaccine platform. However, their full-blown exploitation relies on the availability of efficient engineering strategies.
