Bacterial pigments and their applications

Process Biochemistry, 2013
Natural pigments sourced from ores, insects, plants and animals were the colorants used since prehistoric period. Synthetic dyes which took the place of natural pigments in the middle of 19th century still rule the field to the maximum extent in spite of its hazardous effect to humans, animals and environment.

Staining of Wool by Bacterial Pigments

Nature, 1956
STAINING of the fleece by bacterial pigments has been described1, and a number of colours have been attributed to a variety of organisms. Recent investigations on the staining of Corriedale fleeces during periods of wet weather have shown that several stains similar to some of those described in previous work can be caused by the oxidation or reduction

Bacterial pigment prodigiosin and its genotoxic effect

Russian Journal of Bioorganic Chemistry, 2013
The prodigiosin preparation was isolated and purified from Serratia marcescens ATCC 9986, using chromatographic methods. The analysis of the preparation by TLC, NMR-spectrometry and mass-spectrometry allowed to confirm the red pigment fraction as the prodigiosin and detect its purity. Originally, the specific features of the toxic and genotoxic effects

Bacterial Origin of Some Insect Pigments

Nature, 1946
THE literature on symbiosis, as summarized in Buchner's1 latest book, refers almost entirely to histological and cytological findings. Little work seems to have been done on the isolation of the symbiotes, and less still on their physiological role in insect metabolism.

AhR sensing of bacterial pigments regulates antibacterial defence

Nature, 2014
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a highly conserved ligand-dependent transcription factor that senses environmental toxins and endogenous ligands, thereby inducing detoxifying enzymes and modulating immune cell differentiation and responses. We hypothesized that AhR evolved to sense not only environmental pollutants but also microbial insults. We

Indigoidine and other bacterial pigments related to 3,3?-bipyridyl

Archiv fr Mikrobiologie, 1965

Assessment of Bacterial Pigments as Textile Colorants

Indian Journal of Public Health Research & Development, 2019
The textile industry is considered the second most polluting industry in the world. Synthetic nonbiodegradable petroleum-based dyes and toxic mordants play a major part in this pollution. Almost 20% of global water pollution has been associated with the textile dyeing practices.

Development of Fabric Dye Using Bacterial Pigments

2nd International Conference on Biological Research and Applied Science, 2022
The wastes from industries which produce textile dyes using toxic chemicals and processes pose serious threats to the environment that are often very difficult to treat and dispose. Certainly, there is a need of environment conservation, and more research should be done in order to save it.

Cutaneous Pigmentation: A Probable Sign of Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis

Dermatology, 1980
A cirrhotic patient with ascites was apparently well managed with diuretics and salt and water restriction for 9 months. A spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) developed and the patient finally died following septic shock. There were enough findings indicating that SBP in this case had been existing silently for some time.
