Annual Review of Microbiology, 2001
▪ Abstract A small number of prokaryotic species have a unique physiology or ecology related to their development of unusually large size. The biomass of bacteria varies over more than 10 orders of magnitude, from the 0.2 μm wide nanobacteria to the largest cells of the colorless sulfur bacteria, Thiomargarita namibiensis, with a diameter of 750 μm ...

The most important multiresistant bacteria causing treatment failures are extended-spectrum β-lactamase and/or plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase positive Enterobacteriaceae, carbapenemase producing Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas (P.) aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) aureus, penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae ...

Preventing Bacteria‐Induced Disease With Bacteria
Nutrition in Clinical Practice, 2012Oral administration of a probiotic preparation was shown to be effective in preventing the recurrence of chronic pouchitis in a classic double‐blind, placebo‐controlled trial. This was a novel and unique approach to the care of these patients. Dysbiosis, a condition of microbial imbalance, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel ...

Bacteria with motility directed by the local geomagnetic field have been observed in marine sediments. These magnetotactic microorganisms possess flagella and contain novel structured particles, rich in iron, within intracytoplasmic membrane vesicles. Conceivably these particles impart to cells a magnetic moment.

Bacteria: Listeria monocytogenes
2014Listeria monocytogenes is a ubiquitous microorganism responsible for listeriosis, a rare but severe disease in humans, who can become infected by ingesting contaminated food products, namely dairy, meat, fish, and vegetables. Although it can occur in healthy humans, listeriosis mainly affects the elderly, immunocompromised, persons pregnant women, and ...
