Bactericidal activity of peroxynitrite

Peroxynitrite is a strong oxidant formed by macrophages and potentially by other cells that produce nitric oxide and superoxide. Peroxynitrite was highly bactericidal, killing Escherichia coli in direct proportion to its concentration with an LD50 of 250 microM at 37 degrees C in potassium phosphate, pH 7.4.

Bactericidal activity of tuftsin

The biological activities of the phagocytosis stimulating tetrapeptide, Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg are discussed. A brief account on the stimulation by tuftsin of phagocytosis of various particles, including bacteria was reported. Stimulation of bactericidal activity by this tetrapeptide was investigated in vitro as well as in vivo.

Anomalous Serum Bactericidal Activity

The in vitro assay of serum bactericidal activity in several recent patients with severe infection has shown an unexpected prozone effect. That is, the undiluted, or minimally diluted serum from a patient receiving antibiotic therapy with cephalothin showed growth of a microbial inoculum, whereas more dilute specimens inhibited growth.

A bactericidal activity of microsomal preparations

Exposure of suspension of Salmonella typhimurium tester strains TA1535, TA1537 and TA98 to mouse hepatic post-mitochondrial supernatants (S9) resulted in appreciable loss of bacterial viability. This lethal activity was destroyed by heating at 56 degrees C for 30 min. The toxic component of the S9 has not been identified.

Using the membrane filtration method bactericidal activity of amikacin and gentamicin as a function of time and concentrations was determined. Amikacin was bactericidal against all Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n = 7) and Klebsiella pneumoniae strains (n = 8) tested. In 5 of the 7 P. aeruginosa and 3 of the 8 K. pneumoniae strains we saw a secondary regrowth

The viable populations of seven species of bacteria were reduced 17% to 99% by treatment with a 3% suspension of human cerumen of the soft or “wet” type. Species tested for susceptibility to cerumen were Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis.
