Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Factors Influencing the Development of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Community-Dwelling People Aged 75 Years and Older

open access: yesGeriatrics, 2021
In Asia, including Japan, dementia incidence peaks in older adults over ≥75 years; it is therefore important to detect mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and prevent its onset in this age group. Our study hypothesized that physical and psychological status

Quantitative Measures of a Robot's Ability to Balance

open access: yesRobotics: Science and Systems XI, 2015
This paper shows how to define quantitative measures of a robot’s ability to balance itself actively on a single point of support. These measures are expressed as ratios of velocities, and are called velocity gains. This paper builds on earlier work in this area by showing how these gains can be defined and calculated for the case of a general planar ...

Assessment of Balance Abilities in Pakistani Children

open access: yesPediatric Physical Therapy, 1999
This study is the first to evaluate balance abilities from a functional and cultural perspective in Pakistani children. The effect of gender and socioeconomic status (SES) on balance development of these children was documented. One hundred eighty subjects developing typically (10 boys, 10 girls) between the ages of five and 13 years were recruited per

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Prediction model of all-cause death based on balance ability among middle-aged and older Chinese adults of overweight and obesity

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health, 2022
BackgroundAdvances in studies using body indicators to predict death risk. Estimating the balance ability of death risk in middle-aged and older Chinese adults with overweight and obesity is still challenging.MethodsA retrospective analysis of the data ...
