Technologies for ballast water treatment: a review
Journal of Chemical Technology & Biotechnology, 2009AbstractInvasive aquatic species discharged through ballast water is one of the most serious problems posed nowadays in the marine environment. This review paper summarizes the available technologies applied for ballast water treatment. These technologies can be either port‐based or ship‐based, with the latter being easier to implement.

Electrochemical Cell Applications for Ballast Water Treatment
Marine Technology Society Journal, 2013AbstractThe transportation of exotic species in ballast tanks is one of the most important global environmental problems facing the shipping industry. Electrochemical techniques offer one of the most viable solutions for ballast water problems. This work reports laboratory experiments conducted by Istanbul Technical University (ITU) for the best and ...

Heating techniques in ballast water treatment
2013Ballast water is recognized as a vector for transference of various species from one geographical region to others, all around the world. Consequences are influence on ecology of species in the environment where ballast water is discharged, with the possible impact on human health and/or economy.

Ballast Water Treatment Technologies and Shipboard Demonstrations
OCEANS 2006 - Asia Pacific, 2006Ballast water has been largely responsible for the global transfer of harmful aquatic organisms. When discharged into a new environment, some aquatic plants and animals carried in ballast water may become invaders and seriously disrupt the native ecology and economy.

Effective Ship Ballast Water Treatment System Management
2013Shipping runs the major part of world trade. Using ballast water is the most common way to stabilize a ship after loading and unloading the cargo. Taking ballast water after unloading the cargo would increase the ship’s weight. Therefore draught of the ship increases to the level before unloading.

Treatment of Ballast Water on Board Ships
2015The global transport of ballast water in ocean-going ships contributes substantially to the spread of aquatic invasive species, with serious consequences to local ecosystems. Therefore, the treatment of ballast water prior to discharge will soon become mandatory. Within the last decade, several dozen ballast water treatment systems have been developed.
