Steroid anesthetics and naturally occurring analogs modulate the gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor complex at a site distinct from barbiturates.

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, 1989
The steroid anesthetic alphaxalone and a series of naturally occurring analogs were compared in potency and efficacy with each other and the hypnotic barbiturate pentobarbital for interaction with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors:binding sites in

Barbiturates: Radioimmunoassay

Science, 1971
The development of a radioimmunoassay for barbiturate is described. The barbiturate is made antigenic by coupling it to a protein, bovine gamma globulin. The radioimmunoassay can measure as little as 5 nanograms of barbiturate.

BARBITURATES AND DRIVING

Accident Analysis & Prevention, 1976
Barbiturates are general nervous system depressants which are commonly used as sedatives and hypnotics. Approximately 4% of the adult population, 12% of high school students and 19% of college students have reported using barbiturates. The lack of controlled studies comparing barbiturate involvement in traffic accidents and in the at-risk population ...

Structure-pharmacokinetic relationships among the barbiturates in the rat.

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, 1983
The pharmacokinetics of a congeneric series of barbituric acids were determined after i.v. administration of individual barbiturates or multicomponent barbiturate mixtures to chronically cannulated male rats.
