An evaluation of 0-group abundance indices of Barents Sea fish stocks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The International 0-group fish survey in the Barents Sea (1965-2002) aimed to give initial indication of the recruiting year class strengths. Since 2003 the 0-group survey has been a part of a Joint Norwegian-Russian ecosystem survey of the Barents Sea ...

Polar cod Boreogadus saida occurrence is driven by temperature at the margin of its distribution

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract With a warming Arctic, suitable habitat for polar cod Boreogadus saida (Lepechin 1774) is predicted to decrease. We investigated the changes in distribution of polar cod on the southern limit of its distribution in the Atlantic Ocean (around Iceland) during both autumn and spring after a recent period of warming in the area.

April sea ice extent in the Barents Sea, 1850?2001 [PDF]

open access: yesPolar Research, 2003
Three observational data sets are used to construct a continuous record (1850–2001) of April ice edge position in the Barents Sea: two sets of Norwegian ice charts (one from 1850 to 1949 and the other from 1966 to 2001) and Soviet aircraft reconnaissance ice extent charts from 1950 to 1966.

Heat in the Barents Sea: transport, storage, and surface fluxes [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2010
A column model is set up for the Barents Sea to explore sensitivity of surface fluxes and heat storage from varying ocean heat transport. Mean monthly ocean transport and atmospheric forcing are synthesised and force the simulations. Results show that by

The Role of Atmospheric Blocking in Regulating Arctic Warming

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2022
Using ERA5 reanalysis we find positive trends in poleward transport of moisture and heat during 1979–2018 over the winter Barents Sea sector and summer East Siberian Sea sector. The increase in blocking occurrence (blocking days) can explain these trends.

Rapid increase in abundance and distribution of invasive pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) within a diverse, large Barents Sea catchment

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Pink salmon originate from the North Pacific area but were introduced into northwest Russia from the late 1950s onwards. Since 2017, the alien species has increased dramatically in abundance and rapidly invaded adjacent areas of the North Atlantic region.

Contribution of Calanus to the mesozooplankton biomass in the Barents Sea

open access: yes, 2017
Copepods from the genus Calanus are crucial prey for fish, seabirds and mammals in the Nordic and Barents Sea ecosystems. The objective of this study is to determine the contribution of Calanus species to the mesozooplankton biomass in the Barents Sea ...

Non‐native pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha carcasses benefit native benthic macroinvertebrates

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The invasion of the North Atlantic by pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha has raised concerns regarding their impact on coastal rivers. Although the influence of marine‐derived nutrients from returning adult O. gorbuscha on rivers in their native range has received much attention, the ecological consequences of invasive O.

Beyond spring season: An autumn observation of adult lumpsuckers (Cyclopterus lumpus) in coastal Norway Frøya archipelago raises questions on extended spawning activity

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract During snorkelling near Frøya, central Norway, on 6 October 2025, a pair of adult lumpsuckers (Cyclopterus lumpus) was observed engaged in apparent prespawning behaviour in shallow kelp habitat. Such activity is surprising, as the species is mainly considered a spring spawner throughout the eastern Atlantic and is the focus of a targeted ...
